Manchester’s wine scene is absolutely thriving and its love for a natural wine is definitely not disappearing any time soon. However, a new addition has arrived in the city and as much as we’d like to the keep this venue’s location bottled up for ourselves, we would be doing you a disservice not sharing what a hidden gem this wine bar is. There might a glass of wine and a nibble of cheese left for you…
Opening up within the Kampus garden neighbourhood, Manchester’s latest al fresco bar comes complete with a sun-soaked wine terrace. The Beeswing – an indie wine bar and kitchen – is serving up an exquisite wine selection alongside a wide variety of delicious pinchos, small plates, as well as cheese and charcuterie platters.
Situated on the first floor above the much-loved pizza spot Nell’s at Kampus, The Beeswing is a friendly hangout for lovers of wine and great food. Pair their delicious food and drink offerings with an absolute suntrap of a terrace overlooking the lush gardens and canalside and you have a perfect summer spot- no flights needed.
Among classic and low intervention wines, founder Anna Tutton (previously of Vin-yard at Hatch) is pouring hand-picked selections from Georgia, Lebanon and Greece – be it by the glass, carafe or bottle. Wine-lovers can even take a bottle home from the pop-up shop. There is also a fine wine list if you ask…..
Guests can select from an assortment of wines including a zesty and refreshing white from Spain with notes of passion fruit and lime to a French orange wine with notes of refreshing citrus and green tea. And of course, The Beeswing isn’t shy of a rich and robust red wine nor a crisp and fragrant rosé, plus the Manchester wine bar serves plenty of sparkling wines with the option to add a French liqueur to your fizz in flavours such as raspberry, grapefruit or passion fruit.
And of course, you have to have something to eat alongside the tasty wine. Co-founder Joe Maddock serves up some fantastic light bites that are brilliant for those who love to leisurely dine on a few small dishes than a single massive one.
The Beewsing has taken the classic summer staple of picky bits for tea and elevated this to create a European feel and are made to be the perfect match to your glass of wine. Influenced by Mediterranean and North African flavours the menu features sharing plates like roasted red pepper hummus loaded with a chickpea and cannellini bean salad and served with toasted focaccia; lamb kofta with an Israeli chopped salad and pimento whipped feta dip; spiced potatoes, cauliflower purée, chilli honey aioli and crispy shallots; and variety of pinchos.
The wine bar also offers plenty of bar bites like olives and mackerel pâté on toasted baguette, all perfect to nibble on as you take in the view outdoors or even whilst retreating indoors for a much-needed catch-up (because food and wine solve everything) on a less brighter day. Plus, you can tuck into a mixed plate of cheese from The Crafty Cheeseman and charcuterie from Northern Cure which range from a mild Lancashire and mighty blue cheese to satiating salami slices and beautifully-cured pork loin.
The Beeswing joins a raft of other independent businesses at Kampus, including Nell’s New York Pizza and Bar, Pollen Bakery, Yum Cha Dim Sum Kitchen, Madre’s Mexican Taqueria, Great North Pie Company, Cloudwater beer hall and a General Store.
