We love travel news, especially when it opens up a whole new world of exploring for us, and following recent new routes from Manchester Airport to both Paris Orly and Porto, there’s set to be a ramping up of flights between Manchester and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Although it might seem a bit random, this new Luxembourg route opens up a part of Europe that many glaze over in favour of neighbours Germany or France, and it’s a gem at that.
From Monday 1 April 2024, national airline Luxair will be embarking on three flights per week between Manchester Airport and Luxembourg Airport, meaning flights every Monday, Wednesday and Friday − a stark increase from the one per week on a Friday, as it has been for years.
The one hour 50 minute journey will take you to the 2,586 km² country, which is mostly rural, with dense Ardennes forest and nature parks in the north, rocky gorges of the Mullerthal region in the east and the Moselle river valley in the southeast. Its capital, Luxembourg City, is famed for its fortified medieval old town perched on sheer cliffs, and makes for a stunning city break.
The medieval castles dotted around Luxembourg are perhaps the most famous landmarks that many will think of, with particular focus on Bourscheid Castle, Vianden Castle and the stunning Grand-Château d’Ansembourg, all demonstrating and retelling the rich history of the country, whose monarchy has links with that of The Netherlands.
You can also try Luxembourgish delicacies like Bouneschlupp, a thick soup consisting of green beans, potatoes, and bacon, and Gromperekichelcher, crispy fried potato cakes/fritters, if you fancy. Or perhaps pick up some of the Luxembourgish language, unofficially known as a mixture of French and German − both of which people also speak regionally in Luxembourg.
So, if you’re after something a bit different, there’s plenty to discover in Europe’s best kept secret, the only existing Grand Duchy, Luxembourg, which you can visit via the new flights from Manchester starting next week.
