Nearly a third of British households own a dog and many families want their four-legged family member to accompany them on days out and staycations. So, Sainsbury’s Bank decided to find out the most dog-friendly cities in the UK – and Manchester was named in the top ten.
Sainsbury’s Bank used YouGov data to identify the 31 most popular cities in the UK, removing Poole (a town). They then used data from Tripadvisor, Spare Room and All Trails to find out how many dog-friendly hotels, rooms for rent, pubs, restaurants and walks are in each city.
Here in Manchester, we’re pretty proud of our dog-friendly culture, with increasing shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and other public places allowing pups to cross the threshold. We also have our fair share of doggy events, for city dogs and their owners alike, so we’re not entirely surprised that Manchester came tenth in the list of most dog-friendly cities in the UK.

The research also highlighted that Manchester leads the way for dog-friendly shops, making it a great destination for some retail therapy with your pooch.
The top dog-friendly shops in Manchester include Afflecks and Piccadilly Records, making the Northern Quarter a particular hotspot for furry friends, which is perhaps unsurprising given its proximity to Ancoats, often lauded for its dog population.
Jason King, Chief Customer Officer at Sainsbury’s Bank, said: “Our customers tell us that their dogs are one of the family and so it’s great that our analysis shows that public spaces and hospitality owners are creating dog-friendly environments so that the whole family can get together for holidays and days out.”
So if you’re looking for a day out with your pooch, don’t hesitate to show them around Manchester, whether you’re staying over, going for a walk, or simply need to get from A to B.
