Following the news of Michelin Guide restaurant MAYA closing in May, another dining spot in Greater Manchester has announced it will close to the public. Award-winning Stockport restaurant Cantaloupe has revealed that its last service will take place in early August.
The restaurant, nestled within Stockport‘s Great Underbank, was added to the Michelin Guide within months of opening, joining the likes of Higher Ground, The Spärrows and Erst. The dining spot was praised by the Michelin Guide for its “concise but appealing wine list” as well as its cooking “that relies on simplicity and skill, with immense care poured into [its] dishes.”
Adding to its culinary achievements, Cantaloupe received the Bib Gourmand award earlier this year, an award by Michelin for good food at a great price. However, not all is lost for this award-winning restaurant and wine bar, as the owners will be reopening in late August with a new concept titled Bar Caput.
“Cantaloupe is Caput”
Announcing the news on social media, owners of Cantaloupe said: “Cantaloupe is Caput. Dinner on Saturday 8th August will be our last service as Cantaloupe, before we close to the public and reopen on Wednesday 26th August with a new concept, Bar Caput.
“Over the past 18 months we’ve sated hunger with countless different dishes, utilising all manner of fish, fowl, beast or vegetable; we’ve quenched thirsts with one of the most interesting wine lists in the region and many, many cocktails.

“We’ve had many highlights: from the off site piri piri chicken night, ‘Frango Fandango’ to the on site ‘Le Midi’. Seeing our small restaurant full of the best of Manchester’s industry, on an evening thick with humidity, was a proud moment. And of course we were equally proud of the Good Food Guide Top 100 listing, and the Michelin BIb Gourmand, all from a kitchen 75cm by 3 metres 15, with subpar equipment.
“We’re so grateful for the support we’ve received from Stockport and the wider community. We’ve been blessed with great guests, many of whom have become regulars. To those, a big thank you. Thanks to our wonderful suppliers for coming up with the goods. And thank you of course to all the staff that have helped make Cantaloupe special.”
When is Cantaloupe closing its doors?
Final service will take place at Cantaloupe, 71 Great Underbank, Stockport, SK1 1PE, on Sunday 8th August. You can book a table here.
