This December, Greater Manchester and its surrounding areas come alive with an eclectic blend of festive traditions, world-class entertainment, and cutting-edge culture. Visitors can explore everything from 360-degree immersive exhibitions celebrating David Bowie and prehistoric creatures to enchanted illuminated trails inspired by Harry Potter and Disney Tim Burton’s The Night Before Christmas.
Alongside the bustling city centre Christmas markets and seasonal grottos, the packed calendar features arena concerts from Mariah Carey and Jessie Ware, live orchestral film scores, West End musical theatre, and luxury vintage dining. Check out these wonderful activities and events (both Christmas-related and not) taking place across Manchester this December and finish the year with a bang.

Lightroom brings a new 360° immersive experience to the expansive Warehouse at Aviva Studios this winter. Narrated entirely by David Bowie, the multimedia spectacle pulls from thousands of hours of film in the New York archive, combining rare performance footage, photography, personal notes, and audio recordings.
The exhibition traces the icon’s career from Space Oddity through to Blackstar. You step directly into Bowie’s creative process as each track plays through a specialised spatial audio system, creating an intimate, revealing portrait of his theatricality, spirituality, and songwriting.

For a limited time only, a magical light trail inspired by the world of Harry Potter will be opening around 90 minutes from Manchester. Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest Experience opens its gates in Chester on December 10, welcoming visitors to see creatures like hippogriffs, nifflers, and even Aragog, plus experience some familiar scenes like casting a Patronus, seeing the Thestrals, and attending a Quidditch finale. The light trail has had huge success all over the world (in Perth, Singapore and New York, to name just three locations), so it’s not one to miss.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring in Concert marks the film’s 25th anniversary with an arena tour across the UK and Ireland. You watch the complete film screened on a 60-foot HD display while a 239-piece live ensemble of orchestral musicians, adult choristers, and youth choirs performs Howard Shore’s Oscar-winning score in direct synchronization with the picture.
Each stop features prominent regional ensembles and dedicated conductors, with The Hallé taking the stage at Manchester’s Co-op Live. Conductor Shih-Hung Young leads the Manchester concert alongside vocal soloist Eleanor Grant and the Trinity Boys Choir.

The 1,700-square-metre museum traces Manchester City’s story from its 1880 origins to the present day. Explore ten interactive spaces that combine original memorabilia with recreated environments, including a nostalgic nod to the club’s former Maine Road stadium.
A temporary exhibition marking ten years of Pep Guardiola kicks off the opening. Alongside viewing the major trophies, you can try football punditry in a media zone and take on a shooting game in the City x PUMA Arena inspired by Sergio Agüero’s famous 2012 goal against Queens Park Rangers.
Billy Elliot The Musical

Elton John and Lee Hall’s stage adaptation takes over the Palace Theatre for a six-week festive residency. Set against the backdrop of the 1984–85 miners’ strike in County Durham, the production charts Billy’s journey from the boxing ring to the barre, trading gloves for ballet shoes as his community rallies around him.
The touring cast brings familiar stage and screen faces to the city, with Lesley Joseph stepping in as Grandma alongside Deka Walmsley returning as Dad and Annette McLaughlin as dance teacher Mrs Wilkinson. Original West End cast member Liam Mower also returns to the production, taking on the role of Older Billy.
Jessie Ware

Jessie Ware brings her headline arena show to the UK on The Superbloom Tour, supporting her upcoming record Superbloom. Following dates across North America and Europe, the live run culminates in the UK with a hometown gig at London’s The O2 alongside stops in Manchester and Glasgow.
The production leans into Studio 54-inspired groove-pop, disco rhythms, and theatrical staging. Expect brand-new tracks built around dancefloor escapism alongside established catalogue anthems like “Free Yourself”, “Pearls”, and “Begin Again”.

Now in their 27th year, Manchester’s Christmas Markets bring their signature wooden chalets back to the city centre. With around 200 stalls spread across ten sites, you can browse local and international crafts, tuck into Dutch pancakes and swing grill favourites, or grab a hot drink in one of the new special-edition collector’s mugs.
Albert Square anchors the action, featuring a giant Ferris wheel, a pop-up pub, and the giant Santa back at the Town Hall for the first time in nearly a decade. Further along the trail, check out a brand-new market site at Lincoln Square, explore the redesigned layout at St Ann’s Square, or take to the ice at Cathedral Gardens’ undercover rink, Skate MCR.

A live band and vocalists take over Band on the Wall for a dedicated, hour-long tribute to Marvin Gaye. The Northern Quarter venue turns down the lights for a setlist built on the artist’s biggest tracks, working through everything from “Let’s Get It On” and “Sexual Healing” to “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.”
The Grotto

The Grotto sets up inside the Grade II-listed Corn Exchange, making its central Manchester debut after three seasons at the Trafford Centre. The expanded 30-minute walkthrough follows a new storyline, Santa’s Wish Keepers, sending families through interactive sets including Candy Cane Lane, Gingerbread Lane, the Enchanted Forest, and the Merry Makers Studio before a one-on-one meeting with Father Christmas.
Dedicated sensory-adapted “Whispering Winter” slots run on select mornings, featuring softer lighting, lower sound levels, and reduced visitor numbers for children with special educational needs and disabilities. Grotto tickets also include partner discounts across Corn Exchange restaurants, as well as reduced admission to the neighbouring Skate Manchester ice rink.

Mariah Carey brings her Christmas arena tour to Manchester this winter. The show centres around her 1994 release “All I Want For Christmas Is You”, working through her festive catalogue alongside core pop tracks like “Fantasy,” “Hero,” and “We Belong Together.” The Manchester date wraps up a short three-stop UK run, following shows in Birmingham and London.

Step back 66 million years inside Aviva Studios this winter with a massive 360° immersive dinosaur experience. Narrated by Damian Lewis and scored by Hans Zimmer, the exhibition brings the Emmy-nominated Apple TV documentary Prehistoric Planet directly into the physical space.
The Lightroom production surrounds you with state-of-the-art projections, scaling creatures like the Tyrannosaurus rex and Mosasaurs to their true size. You travel through volcanoes, skies, and deep seas alongside the dinosaurs via a mix of familiar footage from the show and exclusive new CGI sequences.

Step into Halloween Town as you explore a moonlit trail of dazzling lights and iconic characters. Disney Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas Light Trail will soon transform Arley Hall & Gardens into a 1.2-mile, multi-sensory walkthrough featuring over 1,700 light installations, 3D sculptures and scenes from the film. Coming to the UK for the very first time this autumn, the bewitching experience is now open and is suitable for all ages.

Legendary Manchester group 808 State returns to New Century Hall for their third consecutive hometown residency. Dubbed ‘TIMELINES’, the one-off electronic spectacle spans three distinct sets across the evening, kicking off with Graham Massey’s collaborative project TOOLSHED and closing with a headline dive into the band’s classic catalogue.
The centrepiece of the night is an exclusive live run-through of their 1989 mini-album Quadrastate. Revisiting the release in full for the first time, the band taps into original equipment to deliver a pure electronic set, playing the foundational tracks that helped define an era—including the original cut of their signature anthem, “Pacific State”.

Thousands of candles will light up the Grade II-listed Hallé St Peter’s for a dedicated festive run. The String Infusion Quartet takes over the former church’s Gothic Revival interior for an hour-long set, stripping back and rearranging holiday staples for a classical string setup.
The setlist moves through a mix of traditional carols, cinematic scores, and seasonal pop. Expect to hear everything from Tchaikovsky’s “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and “Carol of the Bells” to Wham!’s “Last Christmas” and Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

The West Belfast hip-hop group brings their raucous energy and deep-cutting lyrics to the hallowed Depot Mayfield stage this winter. Touring their May album Fenian, the trio returns to Manchester for a headline Warehouse Project set after ruling the crowd in support of Fontaines D.C. at Wythenshawe Park last year. The Manchester gig lands squarely in the middle of a massive worldwide run spanning South America, New Zealand, and Europe, alongside a packed twelve-date UK and Ireland leg.

The Northern Belle brings 1930s glamour back to the rails with a scenic round-trip journey through the winter countryside. Boarding via a red carpet, you travel in meticulously restored vintage Pullman carriages—historically favoured by royalty and celebrities—while live musicians play Christmas tunes.
The excursion centres on a seven-course festive banquet served directly to your armchair. The menu pairs champagne and caviar canapés with curated wines, finishing with a seasonal dessert, an award-winning cheeseboard with port, and Fortnum & Mason tea or signature coffee.
Christmas Musical Spectacular

A large-scale festive concert takes over AO Arena just before Christmas, pairing West End and Broadway showtunes with holiday anthems. Hosted by Aled Jones, the two-night production backs its vocal cast with live accompaniment from Manchester Camerata and the Manchester Vocal Ensemble.
The lineup features musical theatre veteran Michael Ball alongside The Greatest Showman vocalists Keala Settle and Loren Allred. West End performers Kerry Ellis (Wicked), Ben Forster (The Phantom of the Opera), Alice Fearn, Hugh Maynard, and Kelly Mathieson round out the ensemble, sharing the stage with young performers from the Caldwell Theatre School.
