Every summer we’ve come to expect some immense outdoor gigs here in Manchester, whether taking over huge football and cricket grounds, or the many festivals populating our parks. One particularly Manc outdoor gig series that we always look forward to is Sounds of the City, proudly held annually at the industrial centre of the city, Castlefield Bowl.
This year, the line-up is as incredible as ever, combining some of the biggest names in music with up-and-coming local musicians, and those who have gone on to forge successful careers having started it all right here. Now the series is upon us, we’ve put together a guide to Sounds of the City at Castlefield Bowl to ensure everyone knows where they stand, whether you’re on your way to a gig or just passing through.

Will any of the gigs clash with England World Cup games?
Yes, The Streets‘ gig at Castlefield Bowl on Saturday 11 July is at the same time as England’s World Cup quarter final clash against Norway. Mike Skinner himself has now announced that the schedule on Saturday will shift an hour earlier to accommodate those who want to find the perfect spot for the game: The Streets will now take to the stage at 7.45pm for a 9.30pm finish – giving fans a half hour window.
The Streets confirmed the news on their official social media pages, writing: “Fear not – Saturday’s show will begin early to accommodate england vs norway at 10.”
Gates will now open at 4pm, with support acts including Hyde’s Antony Szmierek and CASisDEAD bringing their sets forward to 5:50pm and 6:15pm respectively.
What restrictions are there for bringing things in?
Do not bring:
- Large bags or rucksacks
- Folding Chairs, Stools, Tables
- Shooting Sticks
- Golf or Large Umbrellas
- Glass
- Cans
- Weapons
- Drugs
- Flags, Banners, Poles, Sticks
- Cool Boxes / Picnic Hampers
- Luggage / Trolley Cases
- Animals (except Assistance Dogs)
- Recording Equipment
- Professional Cameras (i.e. anything with a detachable or large lens)
- Alcohol (carried in any container)
- Any water or Soft drinks in bottles larger than 500ml (As long as the bottle is sealed then you are allowed to bring bottles of water and soft drinks under 500ml)
- Food
- Laser Pens
- Bicycles, Scooters, Skateboards
- Footballs, Golf Balls, Darts (or any Sport Equipment)
- Pushchairs / Prams (No under 5’s permitted)
- Tents/ Gazebos/ Sun Shelters
- BBQ’s, Candles, Lanterns
- Fireworks, Flares
- Air horns, Loud Hailers
- Hi-vis Bibs, Jackets or Vests
- Articles which may be a danger to public or cause nuisance
The management reserves the right to search all persons and personal property.
Are there any exceptions due to the heatwave?
Since Sounds of the City happens to fall mostly over another heatwave in Manchester, remember to bring items to protect you from the sun such as sun cream, hats, sunglasses etc as shade is limited in the venue.
Again, as long as the bottle is sealed, you can bring bottles of water and soft drinks under 500ml into the venue.
How to get to Castlefield Bowl
Getting to Castlefield Bowl is relatively easy, being a city centre venue. If you’ll be getting the train, Deansgate train station is just a 5-10 minute walk away.
Luckily, the track replacement works along the tramlines will only commence comes Monday 13 July, so you can also reach the venue by tram, disembarking at Deansgate-Castlefield tram stop.
Similarly, if you’re anywhere along Deansgate beforehand, you’ll be able to access Castlefield Bowl easily by foot.
