An opening date for a huge new Aldi supermarket in Greater Manchester has been confirmed. The supermarket brand is set to take over the former Morrisons store on Trafford Road, following planning approval from Salford City Council back in October.
The 50,000 sq ft site in Salford, close to Ordsall Park, has been empty for a decade, but the affordable grocery retailer will reopen its doors later this month. Once home to a Morrisons store, the site was built as part of the wider £150m Radclyffe Park regeneration project approved in 2010, which features a 156-bed Travelodge hotel, 11 retail units, and 114 homes.

When will the new Aldi in Salford open?
Aldi has confirmed that it will open the doors to its new store on Trafford Road, Salford on May 28 at 8.00am.
Team GB Olympic medallist and boxer Lewis Richardson is set to attend the opening of a new Aldi supermarket in Salford on May 28. Richardson, who won bronze in the 71kg category at the 2024 Paris 2024 Olympic Games, will be handing out complimentary bags of fresh fruit and vegetables from Aldi’s Super 6 range to the first 30 customers in the queue.

Salford is also set to welcome a new PureGym
The revamp of the former Morrisons store will not only bring a new Aldi to Salford but also a new PureGym. Expected to launch on May 22, the 24-hour fitness space will replace the Exchange Quay branch.
The Salford Quays gym will include a women’s workout space, a dedicated functional training zone, a brand-new Shape area, a spacious free weights area, and a wide range of fixed resistance machines. Free, on-site parking will also be available.

Ordsall Councillor Brendan Keville supported plans to reopen the empty building. In a letter to Salford council’s planning committee, he wrote: “Radclyffe Park shopping centre in Ordsall is an essential part of the local economy with a variety of shops supporting a growing community.
“The closure of the Morrisons store several years ago was a huge loss for the area in terms of local jobs as well as access to a range of affordable food and retail needed in the area.”
Major regeneration works are planned for the Salford area of Ordsall, which include more than 3,000 new homes across ten blocks at Regent Retail Park, including one of the UK’s tallest skyscrapers.

The new Aldi store will be located at Unit 1, 11, Trafford Road, Ordsall, M5 3PH, and will be open 8am – 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am – 4pm on Sundays.
The new PureGym will be located at Markendale Place, M5 3GW, accessible via Phoebe Street, and open 24 hours a day.
