With rail strikes set to take place later this week (September 30) and into the following week, one steakhouse in Manchester has announced a £15 dining deal in a bid to keep drawing people into the city. Popular steak restaurant Hawksmoor, which is located on Manchester’s Deansgate, usually sells its most affordable steak cut (300g rump) for £26 each with dripping or triple-cooked fries at £5.75, but the dining spot has revealed an impressive deal during the rail strikes.
Since July, the restaurant has been running a special deal where diners can enjoy a dish of steak and frites for just £15 during the ongoing tube and rail strikes taking place in the UK. Announcing the news on social media, Hawksmoor admitted that the restaurant “won’t make any money out of it, but it should help to keep our restaurants – and our hard-working teams – busy”.

Revealing the new deal back in July on social media, Hawksmoor wrote: “A Special Rail Strike Announcement. It probably hasn’t escaped your notice that transport strikes aren’t great for restaurants, any more than they’re great for you. Sure, people have the right to strike and fight for more money, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t hard.”
However, since then, Hawksmoor has served over 10,000 portions in 12 days during the summer strike days and announced that “you effectively ate all the steak”. The restaurant had to switch cuts three times during the offer to keep up, but their supply chain can’t catch up quickly enough.
The dining deal, dubbed ‘Move Your Rump’, kicked off from July 20 and has continued for every rail and/or tube strike day that has taken place since. Hawksmoor said that this has left them in “a bit of a conundrum” with more strikes coming and wanting to honour the promise and still have enough steak for everyone else.
The solution – burger and chips. The restaurant will now be offering the Hawksmoor burger plus beef dripping fries for £15. The dining deal will be available on future rail strikes days including September 30, October 4 and October 6 between 12pm and 3pm.
In the social media post announcing the deal, Hawksmoor said: “A good reason to ‘move your rump’ and come have a good time with us. We won’t make any money out of it, but it should help to keep our restaurants – and our hard-working teams – busy, and hopefully gives you a reason to come into town and make a day of it.
“And, if you can’t come to Hawksmoor, consider nipping for lunch somewhere else. The hospitality industry has lost about £3bn since the strikes began and businesses are closing at an increasingly fast rate. A bit of fun for you, a welcome bit of business for them.”
The £15 burger and fries deal is available at London, Manchester, Liverpool and Edinburgh Hawksmoor restaurants by booking on their website and quoting “Strike Burger” in the special request box or quoting this phrase to the host when calling the restaurant or upon arrival. Walk-ins welcome. Strike days are currently confirmed for September 30, October 4 and October 6.
The rail strikes deal can be enjoyed at Hawksmoor restaurants on strike days between 12pm and 3pm. You can book a table at Hawksmoor here.
