Whether you’re after a delicious lunch on-the-go, a catch-up over a cheese board, a store cupboard re-stock or a sun-soaked tipple, this new Manchester deli has it all. Tucked away on Ancoats’ second courtyard and hidden suntrap, just off Murray Street, Ancoats Deli, has opened its doors to serve up “really good sandwiches”, takeaway deli essentials and more.
After spending countless hours listening to friends talk about wanting charcuterie or snacks with their post work or Saturday afternoon drinks, the founders of Ancoats Deli decided to take the plunge. A welcome addition to the established foodie area of Ancoats, sandwich staples are accompanied by coffee, cheese, charcuterie as well as a small, well-chosen selection of Martinis, Spritz and wines, to drink in, outdoors on the sunny courtyard, or to take home. Ancoats Deli also has a stocked pantry of essentials, where you can pick up milk, eggs, dinner ingredients and a bottle of post dinner wine to takeaway.
Manchester based bakery and neighbour, Companio, provides fresh baked bread for the Ancoats Deli sandwiches, including house favourite, the classic Jambon Beurre with or without mustard, Reuben with pastrami, and an Egg Sandwich of soft boiled eggs, jammy yolks, Dijonnaise and watercress. You can also find a range of salads as well as takeout cheese and meat boxes designed for picnics in the Manchester sunshine, accompanied with a chilled bottle of wine, beers or from a selection of canned cocktails, straight from the deli fridge. And better still, you’ve not got far to go with New Islington Marina and Cotton Field Park just around the corner.
Feeding on the trickiness to sometimes grab lunch in the Manchester neighbourhood, Ancoats Deli has tapped into this by even offering a meal deal to rival supermarket ones, and you’re likely to feel fuller for longer too. For £10, you can order a sandwich on freshly made bread with the option of either a soft drink or coffee to sip on as well as a packet of crisps or takeout serving of olives.
Co-founder India Morris said: “Lunch time in Ancoats can often be a little tricky, it’s a foodie destination packed full of amazing restaurants and bars, but we felt there was a gap for somewhere to pick up a really good, affordable sandwich or salad. We don’t want it to be fancy, we want Ancoats Deli to provide a place where residents and those working locally, can pick up a tasty sarnie deal, without breaking the bank.”
And with a gorgeous counter filled with cheese and cured meats, cheese and charcuterie boards designed for sharing had to be on the menu. These, along with accompanying wines, come from local friends and familiar faces at The Crafty Cheeseman and Yapp Bros. Boards start from £16 with glasses of wine from £5.20, providing the perfect set-up for an after work refreshment, catch up with friends or post Saturday shopping treat.
“Our wines are great, but affordable and our cocktail menus are simple and accessible. We wanted to create a space where everyone can come, feel comfortable and just have a lovely time with a pint. Fingers crossed the sunshine stays long enough.”
With space to sit indoors, soak up the sunshine on the sunny courtyard or take away, Ancoats Deli is the perfect little spot come rain or shine.
Ancoats Deli is open 11am-4pm Mondays and Tuesdays, 11am-11pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 11am-9pm on Sundays at Kennedy Building, 6 Murray Street, M4 6HS.
