Kebabs aren’t just reserved for the post-night out binge meal, in fact, they can actually be pretty healthy and full of tasty, lean meats and veggies that taste much naughtier than they really are. And if you fancy branching out a little and tasting something a little closer to the Turkish real deal, Manchester has just the spots. Check out our guide to the best kebabs in Manchester.
1. BAB
BAB has been a foodie favourite in the city ever since it opened back in 2018, serving up fresh, gourmet-style kebabs that are self-described as ‘worth sitting down for’. Each kebab is served on a freshly made flatbread (from scratch!), before being neatly packed with succulent, seasoned meats, fresh veggies and more. The restaurant caters to meat-eaters, vegans and vegetarians, and they even create their own marinades, sauces and bread in-house – leaving you with fresh and vibrant flavours. BAB NQ, 14 Little Lever St, M1 1HR.
2. German Doner Kebab
GDK provides a doner with a difference, taking the typical kebab flavours we already know and love and combining them with leaner, healthier meats such as beef and chicken. If you’re a sucker for a lamb doner, you’ll love the beef doner (which tastes exactly the same!) – and the portions are incredibly generous. Try novelty items such as doner spring rolls and their high protein ‘gym box’, as well as doner quesadillas and even nachos. German Doner Kebab, 14 Oxford Rd, Manchester M1 5QA | 311-313 Wilmslow Rd, Fallowfield, M14 6NW.
3. The Oast House
The Oast House serves up some seriously classy kebabs, hanging from a unique hanger with a saucepot on top that you can pour through (for full coverage!) and fries at the bottom to nibble on. The kebabs are a little healthier due to having no bread, and there’s a number of options to choose from such as chicken, lamb, halloumi, pork, and chicken and chorizo. These kebabs are perfect for an alfresco dinner in Manchester. Nom! The Oast House, The Avenue Courtyard, M3 3AY.
4. Vegan Shack
Opting for a vegan diet? Vegan Shack is the perfect takeaway spot for all the comfort food you could possibly desire – including their very own plant-based doner kebab. Get cosy on the sofa, pop on a movie, and tuck into a specially crafted kebab made with seasoned Seitan with traditional kebab toppings (plant-based, of course). If that wasn’t enough, they also serve up a vegan Shawarma kebab created with seasoned soya chunks (replicating a chicken kebab), which is, again, finished off with traditional sauces and toppings. Vegan Shack, Unit F, One Piccadilly Gardens, Manchester M1 1RG.
5. What The Pitta
The Northern Quarter’s top vegan joint, What The Pitta, offers delicious plant-based gyros, packed with vegan doner alike to the famous Turkish-style meats we all know and love. Coming to life after a trip to Bodrum, the tasty kebabs gained quite the cult following down in London, and now, the people of Manchester can get a taste, too. Expect doners, gyros, falafel, and plenty of loaded fries, too. What The Pitta, 42 Back Turner St, M4 1FR.
