As the festive season draws near, the search for the most captivating Christmas markets is on. Of course, we have a great one here in Manchester, if we do say so ourselves, but if you’re looking for a slightly calmer, slower paced Christmas market, there’s one northern city you can’t let pass by, and that’s York.
Known for its Roman history, Russell Group university and gorgeous medieval buildings, the walled city is a go-to for those in the know all year round, but when it comes to Christmas markets, York is one of the most beautiful. In a study by Solopress, York was named the sixth most beautiful Christmas market in the UK, up there with big dogs including our very own Manchester, Edinburgh and London’s Winter Wonderland.
Using engagement data from platforms like Instagram and TikTok, the printing company compiled a list of over 60 of the most celebrated markets, not only revealing which markets captivate visitors but also underscore the importance of creating shareable, memorable experiences that make an impact both in person and online.
The social media-friendly Christmas markets listings feature some grand gatherings that are buzzing with bustling energy. York boasts 307 TikTok posts and 12,045 Instagram posts, giving the Christmas market a total of 2.28. With 75 alpine chalets lining Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square, the market offers a magical array of local crafts, artisan products, and delicious seasonal treats.
The vintage carousel on King’s Square adds to the festive atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for families and visitors alike. With 80% of the traders hailing from Yorkshire, this is a fantastic opportunity to support local businesses while enjoying the best of what the region has to offer.
When it comes to food, York Christmas market has an array on offer so you won’t leave hungry, especially around Shambles Kitchen. From Scandi bratwursts and Swedish meatballs to fruit crumble desserts slathered with custard and even brûléed, luxury, handmade pies from award-winning Yorkshire chef Tommy Banks to pasta cooked in a giant cheese wheel from Italian restaurant, Lucia.
The market is not just about shopping – it’s about creating a welcoming and inclusive experience for everyone. There’s a focus on sustainability with a selection of traders committed to ethical and eco-friendly practices, and a quieter period from 10am to 12pm daily ensures that the market is accessible to all visitors.
The Take A Seat Initiative ensures that everyone, including those with reduced mobility, can comfortably enjoy the festivities around the city, while the Safe Space Scheme offers peace of mind for those who might need it. And with public transport options like York Park & Ride making it easy to get into the city centre, it’s never been easier to experience the magic of Christmas in York.
Whilst you’re there, why not drop into York Minster for a bit of history and architecture, or visit Betty’s Tea Room – a quintessential Yorkshire experience? York is a beautiful city to visit at any time of year, but when the Christmas market is bustling, there’s an extra hint of quaint magic that’s hard to describe.
York is around a 1 hour 30 minute drive from Manchester city centre, and you can get a direct train from Manchester Victoria, which takes around the same amount of time. FlixBus also launched a route from Manchester to York earlier this year, with tickets starting at just £7.99, so those coming from further afield and locals alike can easily access this winter wonderland.
