We have some astounding countryside all around Manchester, with no shortage of incredible, life-affirming walks and drives. One area that seems to have caught the imagination of many online is Winnats Pass in the wonderful Peak District, just west of Castleton. According to TikTok, Winnats Pass is the place to go for a scenic drive like no other, with the limestone gorge offering panoramic views, looking across vast fields and rolling hills.
SIXT – the premium car rental company – has found that Winnats Pass has had over 9.6 million views on TikTok, with comments saying: “That drive is truly magical”, “I would be so overwhelmed I would weep” and “heaven!!!”
Winnats Pass is around a 1 hour 25 minute drive from Manchester city centre, with the views getting gradually more scenic as you approach the Pass. From Manchester, you’ll go through other areas of the Peak District, and a day trip could take you to the gorgeous nearby Mam Tor, and Blue John Cavern, both of which boast the natural ruggedness of this beautiful National Park, both above and below ground.
Of course, a walk around anywhere in the Peak District is incredible, taking in the rural fresh air and the beautiful scenery, but the drive through Winnats Pass adds the extra dimension of being in the view itself. The journey is as much of a joy as the ramble, which is not always a given. Around the Pass you’ll find quaint villages such as Castleton, Hope and Edale, with cafes, pubs and shops that are always welcoming to visitors, all with the northern charm we all love – perfect for a day out.
As we approach the depths of autumn, it’s the perfect time for people who love cosy vibes (everyone) to check out the beautiful colours of Winnats Pass at its peak, and with the sun starting to come up later, the prime time for this dreamy drive will be between 7am – 8am, when the sun will come up over the gorge.
Winnats Pass is located at Hope Valley, S33 8WA.
