It’s an ode to the emotionally-charged art form that transcends language barriers.
There is limited availability for the performances at Stoller Hall, so make sure to secure your spot before tickets sell out. It’s a must-watch for anyone seeking a unique cultural experience in the heart of the city.
What is “We Call It Flamenco”?
Flamenco is a symbol of the Andalusian gitano culture and in 2010 it was designated a heritage of humanity by UNESCO. Every guitar strum and every intense movement tells a story of passion and tradition. “We Call It Flamenco” brings the traditional tablao venues to you through a number of famous palos played masterfully by Spanish flamenco musicians. Wearing traditional mantones (Manila shawls) and flamenca dresses, the bailaoras (dancers) will mesmerise guests with their thunderous steps and pour their hearts into every movement.
Flamenco, its palos and the show
Flamenco’s origins are deeply rooted in the cultural melting pot of Andalusia, with influences from Moorish, Romani and Andalusian culture. Although it emerged as an artistic expression of these marginalised communities, it evolved over time incorporating new elements. Soon after, it gained popularity beyond its local roots, becoming a symbol of Spanish identity.
If you’re not familiar with flamenco, palos are different traditional musical forms. There are over 50 palos in flamenco but this show will offer its guests six different acts to experience: the fandango, known as the mother style; zambra, danced barefoot with finger cymbals; soleá por bulerías, more cheerful in nature; tangos, an animated form with heavy guitar strumming on 2, 3 and 4 beats; cantiñas, from Cádiz; and bulería, a fast flamenco with a 12 beat cycle.
That might seem like a mathematical equation to many, but you can sigh a breath of relief because the professional bailaores will give a brief description of each form during the performance. Olé!
