If you ever find yourself south west of Manchester, you might be lucky enough to come across a pub like no other, with its very own lights switch-on ceremony and a whole load of festivities. You honestly can’t miss The Stamford pub with its grotto-like façade, and when you venture in, you realise the Christmas magic doesn’t stop there.
Located in the leafy area of Bowdon, Altrincham, The Stamford is a modern interpretation of pubs from a bygone era; a social space enjoyed by the local community and visitors alike, serving the wider Altrincham, Hale and Cheshire area.
This year’s Christmas lights switch-on marked the fifth year of the tradition for The Stamford pub, wowing crowds from all over with Christmas cheer and a full choir to kick off the festivities. The area of Bowdon is technically in Altrincham, but doesn’t benefit from the pomp and circumstance that their better-known neighbour does; so The Stamford decided to take one for the team, hosting the annual switch-on free of charge for the community.
Now, pub owner Nicholas Theaker adds new festive touches to the pub every year, which this year includes a new sleigh and extra light-up reindeers outside. The pub boasts 12 decorated Christmas trees as well as a singing Santa in the bar, alongside hosting wholesome wreath-making workshops for the whole family.
Also new this year is the Christmas tree shop on board thanks to a local gardener, where punters can buy freshly cut trees outside the pub daily from 1pm – 7pm and on weekends from 9am to 7pm throughout December – try carrying one of those home after a few pints.
Of course, on any other day, as well as the festive season, The Stamford boasts a fresh food on their à la carte menu alongside lunch specials throughout the pub, and a crowd-pleasing set-priced menu on a Sunday, including their famous mixed meat roasts, and of course a dedicated Christmas menu.
If you fancy something special, why not check out The Stamford’s adjoining restaurant, The Ugly Duckling, serving quirky small plates and killer cocktails? It’s a recipe for a wonderful Christmas time, and why not take the opportunity to visit this magical winter wonderland right under your nose?
