Just when we thought the Hawaiian pizza was controversial enough, one Manchester pizzeria has decided to shake things up or shall we say fire things up with a new pizza special. And for those looking for a bit of wartime nostalgia, this pizza has been topped with the iconic processed pork from a can, Spam.
Known as the Honolulu Heatwave, NYC-style pizzeria Nell’s is surfing on a wave of canned sunshine with this pizza, offering a sweet, salty and fiery combination of flavours. Featuring both Tabasco Sriracha, Tabasco Sweet and Spicy; crispy Spam, ginger and pineapple jam, spring onions and smoked Lancashire cheese, the pizza is available at all Nell’s sites from October 6th until November 20th. Plus, for those who fancy a meat-free option of this Tabasco pizza special, Nell’s has produced a delicious alternative with smoked tofu on top instead of Spam.
Spam may have been part of the wartime rations back in the day but over the years it has seen a bit of a resurgence. The canned meat is also a super popular staple in some countries across Asia like the Philippines, South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong as well as the Pacific Islands including Hawaii.
Nell’s will also be giving away mini Tabasco bottles with every special order for the whole month at Kampus, Common and The Beagle. The last of this year’s famous specials, the Honolulu Heatwave replaces the McDoughNell’s; last month’s vegan homage to…well, you know who.
Also joining in on the fiery fun is Tariff & Dale, who have also launched a Tabasco-topped pizza, which is available from October 7th until October 30th. This pizza special is laced with Tabasco Sweet and Spicy with a plantain and pesto Tabasco sauce-spiked base with peach and Parma ham, Tabasco sriracha sauce with bacon, pickle and mustard.
