IKEA is closing its Stockport Plan and Order Point on this June, after launching in March 2023. The store, located at Stockport‘s Merseyway Shopping Centre, was the second of this test and trial format to open in the UK – a space dedicated to kitchen and home planning.
The closure of Stockport IKEA Plan and Order Point comes as a result of valuable learnings which will take the conceptual format in a direction to better suit the needs of UK customers. Since the opening of Stockport Plan and Order Point, IKEA has seen an increased demand for Click and Collect services, a desire to shop a smaller selection of home furnishing accessories, as well as the ability to return goods to physical IKEA units, something which, owing to the space available, the current location is unable to offer.
Salma Azad, IKEA Area Manager said: “After careful evaluation, we’ve made the difficult decision to close the IKEA Plan and Order Point at Merseyway Shopping Centre. In the two years since opening, we’ve taken valuable learnings, including how our customers prefer to meet IKEA, and we’ll take these insights into future openings, to serve shoppers in a more impactful way.
“I want to sincerely thank all of the customers that have shopped with us in this time. IKEA Manchester, a store locals know and love, will continue to be the closest hub for home planning, meatballs and everything in between.”
What does the closure mean for other IKEA branches?
To better service its customers, future Plan and Order Point openings, including in Dundee, Hull and York will offer these services. IKEA also remains committed to trialling new formats including its upcoming small stores, one of which will open in Chester later this year. The Manchester (Ashton) store will remain open, offering all the services available at Stockport, and more.
In addition to the upcoming opening of a smaller IKEA store in Chester, the North West continues to be an area of interest for future expansion. IKEA UK is amidst an ambitious retail expansion plan which will see three new Plan and Order Points open this year, small stores in Harlow and Norwich, in addition to the upcoming store in Chester, and a city store in Brighton. This follows last month’s launch of IKEA Oxford Street, the UK’s second city store.
Which IKEA stores are closest to Stockport?
Thanks to last year’s click and collect expansion, Stockport residents can now pick up purchases from Tesco Extra Stockport and Tesco Extra Stretford, as well as the Manchester store and the upcoming small store in Chester.
What date is IKEA Stockport closing?
IKEA Stockport Plan and Order Point’s final day of trading will be on 16th June 2025, so make sure your orders are in before closing.
