Craft activities like pottery, painting and crochet have seen a rise in demand, and sewing is no different. Gone are the days of your grandma patching up your favourite, over-worn clothes as now, whether you’re six or 96, many want to get into the stitching craze. If you’re pretty crafty when it comes to making clothes or a total sewing beginner, independent sewing school and fabric shop Sew Creative in Altrincham has all the skills and equipment (and the patience) to help you create a new garment or accessory.
Founded by Kate, who has previously worked in the fashion industry and as a textiles teacher, Sew Creative very nearly didn’t happen. Kate started sewing classes on a table in Hobbycraft with a couple of old machines and some bits and pieces from her personal fabric stash. Sitting there for several weeks, with no customers or interest, she was about to give up when Sue (now a member of staff), Kate’s first ever customer, approached her asking if she’d teach her how to make her own patterns – and from there, Sew Creative was born!
Since 2016, Sew Creative has blossomed into a full-on outfit with a growing team and a space that hosts regular sewing classes for all ages, holiday clubs and even a Teen Fashion Week that’ll give Project Runway designers a run for their money. Or if you just fancy a place to sew and have a chat, Sew Creative has got you with their open sewing sessions.
Classes at the Altrincham sewing school are a great alternative to your typical corporate team-building events, hen dos and birthday parties – and you’ll leave having made something that you would genuinely want to wear. Sew Creative also host sip and stitch sessions where you the creative juices and drinks are flowing.
Located on Altrincham’s main high street, Stamford New Road, the space is decked out with rows of Brother sewing machines, overlockers and embroidery machines. You’ll find huge cutting tables for you to cut patterns and plenty of equipment to being your unique design to life. Whether you want to make a pair of pyjama bottoms or embroider your favourite denim jacket, create your very own leather wallet or master a big project like a prom dress, Sew Creative can help make it happen.
