We’re only a month away from the release of the Sabrina The Teenage Witch reboot, and as the trailer shows, it’s going to be veeeerry different from the original.
Based on the Archie comic, Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina, the reboot has the same basic premise (blonde, teenage witch) as the beloved 90’s series, but that seems to be where the similarities end.
Described by Netflix as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult and witchcraft, the series will be more in the vein of Rosemary’s Baby and The Exorcist than its light-hearted predecessor. This adaptation sees Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature — half-witch, half-mortal — while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family and the daylight world humans inhabit. Right then.
Mad Men’s Kiernan Shipka, will take the reins as the teen heroine who will still be living with her aunts Hilda (played by Lucy Davis) and Zelda (Miranda Otto) and will still be madly in teenage love with Harvey Kinkle (Ross Lynch).
The family will be joined by a few new faces including Sabrina’s pan-sexual warlock cousin Ambrose Spellman (Chance Perdomo), her favourite teacher, turned host to the devil Mary Wardwell (Green Wing and Doctor Who star Michelle Gomez) and the Weird Sisters Agatha (Adeline Rudolph), Dorcas (Abigail Cowen) and Prudence (Tati Gabrielle).
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will begin streaming on Netflix on October 26, just in time for Halloween.
