Spring weather brings an undeniable urge to swap city pavement for dirt paths and green canopies. Just a short drive from Manchester lies an expansive estate where the region’s manufacturing past meets dense woodland.
Quarry Bank offers a massive retreat for those looking to stretch their legs outside the urban centre. Recently named one of Britain’s ‘most beautiful spring walks‘, this National Trust site covers a 400-acre expanse.
Walkers can navigate a network of riverside paths and shaded trails, and access to these wider estate walks is completely free of charge. The sheer scale of the grounds provides plenty of space to roam away from weekend crowds, with the sounds of the water replacing traffic noise.
Cotton mills & industrial heritage
The natural environment here sits in sharp contrast to monumental brick architecture. The property is home to one of the best-preserved cotton mills in the country, a towering reminder of the region’s booming textile industry during the Industrial Revolution.
Following a long walk, many visitors head over to the nearby village of Styal for a hearty meal.

Ticket pricing & facilities
While the forest paths cost nothing to explore, diving deeper into the property’s legacy requires a ticket. Access to the Mill, Apprentice House, and upper gardens costs around £24 for a standard adult, though entry is complimentary for National Trust members. There are also various family tickets available, and children (5-17) are £12 – under 5s go free.
The main facilities and historic buildings operate daily from 10:30am to 5pm, although some times differ. You can check for the day of your visit here.
📍You can find the entrance at Quarry Bank, Styal Rd, Styal, Wilmslow SK9 4HP.
