Manchester weather isn’t exactly famous for sunshine, but there are always hardcore open-water swimmers willing to take the plunge year-round. Once the sun finally does appear, the rest of us rush to join them. While Greater Manchester has some decent outdoor swimming spots, Pennington Flash—located on the Leigh/Warrington border just a 40-minute drive from the city centre—is a consistently reliable choice.
A historic nature reserve
Spanning 70 hectares, Pennington Flash is the crown jewel of the Pennington Flash Nature Reserve. In October 2022, Natural England officially designated it as Greater Manchester’s first National Nature Reserve – although we do have a brand new National Nature Reserve on the way.

Born from industrial mining subsidence (which is what defines a ‘flash’), the lake serves as a brilliant example of nature successfully reclaiming an industrial landscape.
Coming in as the region’s second-largest body of water (just behind Hollingworth Lake in Littleborough), Pennington Flash is well-known for hosting the Bolton IRONMAN, where athletes tackle a gruelling 1.9km swim before hitting the tarmac.
Everything you need at Swim Pennington
Operating out of the Leigh and Lowton Sailing Club at the western end of the lake, Swim Pennington is a NOWCA registered venue. It’s an ideal spot for open water swimming, offering easy access to the water, plentiful free parking, and full changing, shower, and toilet facilities.

- Session times: Open every Saturday morning year-round, with extra evening sessions running from late April to the end of September.
- Flexibility: Swim in “skins” or a wetsuit, whether you’re popping in for a quick dip or aiming for a 3.5km endurance swim.
- Accessibility: Conveniently reached via the A580 East Lancs road and the M6.
Courses and safety guidelines
Swim courses vary from a brief 200m loop to the full 1.9km IRONMAN stretch. Always check the notice board for the day’s open courses and familiarise yourself with the layouts before you dive in.

Swim Pennington strongly advises safety first: know your limits, stick to shorter loops if you’re a beginner, and always enter the water gradually to allow your body to acclimatise to the temperature.
Not keen on getting wet? You can enjoy formal or casual sailing with the local club, or simply take a scenic walk around the lake for a brilliant day out. Whether you plan to dive in or stay completely dry, Pennington Flash is a fantastic spot to make the most of the spring and summer weather.
