Oldham Road improvement works have started, which are set to improve the roads and footpaths in the Ancoats area. As part of the Streets For All programme several road improvements will be introduced in Oldham Road between Bengal Street and Portland Street, just north of the city centre, meaning part of the huge gateway into town will be closed in increments.
There will be some disruption to footways, but pedestrian and emergency vehicle access will be always maintained.
These works will consist of measures to:
- Improve the safety of cycleways
- Improve crossings and footpaths across Oldham Road, providing additional safety to pedestrians crossing
- Install new traffic signals at the junction of Oldham Road and Radium Street
- Replace the road surface
- Apply new road markings
- The improvement scheme started today (Monday, May 13), and is expected be completed in the Autumn of 2024.
The first phase of the project will take 2−3 weeks to complete and will require a single lane closure on both carriageways of Oldham Road between Bengal Street and Poland Street.
The rest of the improvement works are planned as follows:
Phase Two (approximately seven weeks) − Cycle lane and one general traffic lane closed outbound on Oldham Road between Radium Street and Poland Street
Phase Three (approximately three weeks) − One inbound lane partially closed on Oldham Road at the Poland Street junction
Phase Four (phase length to be determined) − Radium Street fully closed at the junction with Oldham Road. Bus lane suspended at this point. A signed diversion will be in place.
Phase Five (phase length to be determined) − Full lane closures in both directions on Oldham Road overnight (on separate dates from each other). Signed diversions will be in place.
Councillor Tracey Rawlins, Executive Member for Environment and Transport said: “As part of our ongoing work across the city we are looking at ways to make journeys safer for all our residents and improve transport links along key transport arteries.
“The Oldham Road corridor is an extremely busy and well-used stretch of road, providing a link to Ancoats and the city centre, which is why it’s important that this work takes place. Updates will be provided as the work progresses, and as ever I’d advise people to plan their journey in advance to make sure any disruption can be minimised.”
