Ever since Liam Gallagher had a stint voicing the tram announcements on the Ashton line a few months ago, we’ve not had anything nearly as iconic happen. Well, hold onto your hats, because it has now been announced that new collaborators and Manc icons Liam Gallagher and Stone Roses guitarist and singer John Squire will be voicing the Metrolink tram announcements this Manchester Derby Day (Sunday 3 March).

Derby day in Manchester presents all sorts of cross-city rivalries, but this Sunday’s clash at the Etihad will have one more face-off. This time, it will be on the Metrolink, as City fan Liam Gallagher and United-lover John Squire are doing tannoy announcements on the trams ahead of kick-off for 2024’s derby day.
The duo have just released a self-titled album, and have announced their tour, which includes several gigs in their hometown of Manchester. Passengers will hear the announcements on services going via Manchester city centre tram stops and on the Ashton line from midday on Sunday, to coincide with kick off at 3.30pm.
Liam has home ground advantage with the Manchester Derby being held at City’s Etihad Stadium this time, but the pair will have equal audio time on the Metrolink. There will also be a special competition across the Bee Network offering exclusive prizes this weekend linked to the pair’s new album, with adverts at stations and trams giving details of how to enter.
Andy Burnham, an Everton season-ticket holder, has no skin in the derby game — but said he is looking forward to the match, praising the musicians’ support of the Bee Network, and in turn their new album.
The Manchester Derby kicks off at 3.30pm on Sunday 3 March, with buses, trams, and the roads expected to be busy. Fans should plan their journey ahead of time, especially if you want to hear those derby day Metrolink announcements!
