Newly-crowned Premier League champions Manchester City have been invited to celebrate their historic four-in-a-row achievement with fans this weekend with a parade through Manchester city centre. Taking place on Sunday 26 May, the celebration event will start from the National Football Museum and continue along Deansgate with the football team making their way down the road on an open top bus.
As the first ever male team since the inception of the Football League in 1888 to win four successive championships, civic leaders were keen to put an invite out to the club for them to celebrate their historic achievement with their fans in the city. Manchester City beat West Ham United 3-1 on Sunday (May 19) in order to secure their Premier League win, however the FA Cup against Manchester United is still all to play for.
Councillor Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: “Congratulations to Manchester City. Being crowned premier league champions once again and for an astonishing fourth year in a row is an incredible achievement by the club and its players, showing once again that Manchester’s world class sporting credentials really are second to none.
“We know how much this means to fans of the club young and old – not just in Manchester but around the globe – and the homecoming parade on Sunday promises to be an unmissable night to remember for fans and players alike as they celebrate this historic title win together.”
When and where will the Manchester City parade take place?
Manchester City fans will be able to get a glimpse of the team and the winners’ silverware as the team make their way in an open top bus from the National Football Museum, through Cathedral Gardens and along the length of Deansgate. The bus will stop at several points along the way to give fans plenty of time to see the Premier League winners and grab a picture.
Members of the public who want to join in the celebrations should note that the city centre is already expected to be busy on Sunday as the Great Manchester Run is also taking place that day and will see tens of thousands of runners take to the city’s streets, with the final stretch of the race finishing on Deansgate.
In order to allow enough time for Deansgate to be reset once all Great Manchester Run activities end at 3.30pm on Sunday 26th May, the Manchester City celebratory parade will be an evening parade. The event will start at 7.30pm and is expected to finish around 9pm.
Which roads will be closed for the parade?
