History’s animal heroes will come to life as part of IWM North’s fun-filled family events for October half-term
Stories of real-life animal heroes will be brought to life at Imperial War Museums North this October half term, as the museum celebrates the publication of a new children’s book collaboration with Puffin, Tales of Amazing Animal Heroes (published October 10, 2019).
On October 26 and 27 visitors to IWM North will be able to see some of the incredible animal stories jump off the page. While interactive story-telling events will allow families to discover powerful feats of animal bravery throughout history.
Leading vet charity, PDSA, who run the world’s most distinguished and respected animal awards programme, will tell the stories of the incredible dogs, pigeons, horses and cat who have been awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal, recognised internationally as the animals’ Victoria Cross.
Written by award-winning author Mike Unwin, Tales of Amazing Animal Heroes tells the heart-wrenching stories of real animals who went above and beyond to save human lives. Using expert knowledge from IWM, and with an introduction by Michael Morpurgo, the book journeys through history from Hannibal’s elephants to a guide dog in the Twin Towers.
Other half term activities at IWM North include, We Were There, an amazing opportunity to hear the personal stories of veterans and eyewitnesses from the Second World War, Cold War, Korean and Falkland Wars (October 22 and 24).
And Documentary Challenge, which will give visitors the opportunity to make and feature in their own mini-documentary, choosing which stories are too important to be kept inside the museum.
This hands-on activity gives visitors the chance to have their say and share stories ranging from spies to bomb shelters and from refugees to ration books.
Documentary filmmakers at SMASH TV will guide families in creating their documentary which will be available to download afterwards. (Daily £10 per family, no booking required).
