Manchester isn’t short of coffee shops, and whether independent spots or familiar chain names are more your bag, there’s something for you in the city. But which is the most popular?
A recent survey by Capital on Tap of 1,000 UK consumers found that 41% of Brits prefer independent coffee shops, compared with 23% who favour national chains. This points to a market shaped by two competing mindsets: one driven by routine and convenience, and another by experience and discovery.

Manchester’s independent coffee scene is something to marvel at, with a spot to get expertly made coffee on practically every corner. Now, an OG Manchester name has been ranked the sixth most popular independent coffee shop in the UK for 2026.
The team at Capital on Tap analysed more than 100 independent coffee shops across the UK, ranking them using a combination of Google review ratings, review volumes, average monthly Google search volumes and Instagram followers.
Idle Hands named amongst the most popular independent coffee shops for 2026

Manchester’s Idle Hands Coffee has been named the sixth most popular independent coffee shop in the UK for 2026, and of course we can see why. With a famous spot on a Dale Street corner, Idle Hands has always been a go-to for coffee-lovers, right in the heart of the Northern Quarter.
With a Google rating of 4.6, 1145 reviews, and 24,700 Instagram followers, Idle Hands is as strong as ever, dealing in delicious pies, stunning sandwiches and of course, expertly made and roasted coffee. It’s most definitely worth a visit, whether you’re a visitor to town, or need a pick-me-up during your work day.
