It was only earlier this year that we had to say goodbye to the Greens restaurant in Didsbury, however the dining spot owned by Simon Rimmer has announced today that it will be closing its Sale restaurant “with immediate effect”. Terrifying carnivores since 1990, Greens has become an institution when it comes to vegan and vegetarian food in the Greater Manchester area, however the doors to their remaining restaurant in Sale will now be closing.
Located in Stanley Square, Sunday Brunch‘s Simon Rimmer and co-owner Simon Connolly opened the restaurant back in 2022, following the success of their West Didsbury branch which closed in January due to the landlord increasing their rent by 35%. Greens has been serving up imaginative dishes packed full of flavour but minus the meat for over 30 years.
In a statement posted to the Greens Instagram page, the owners said: “It is with deep regret that the board of directors and shareholders have decided to close the doors permanently of Greens Sale with immediate effect.
“We’ve done everything possible to make this work, but it is now clear the business is untenable. We’d like to thank everyone, team members and guests, who have been on the Greens journey with us.”
Greens was quite the trailblazing restaurant as one of the first dining spots to serve a meat-free menu in Manchester. The restaurant’s infamous take on ‘duck pancakes’ – made with deep fried oyster mushrooms instead – have remained on the menu for decades and their veggie black pudding has also been a hit with customers in search of meat alternatives.
The restaurant has wowed veggies and non-veggies alike with their menu and ethos: “It’s not your lifestyle, but your taste-buds we care about” over the years. The Sale branch has also previously been praised for having one of the best Sunday roasts in the UK by Rate Good Roasts.
