We’ve had the August Gloop hot chocolate, but soon another creation inspired by a Roald Dahl novel is set to arrive in the city. Bringing their infamous (and absolutely huge) Bruce (now known as Bertha) chocolate cakes with them, Northern bakery Get Baked is opening up a location in Manchester, meaning Mancs can get a taste of the mountainous cake that’s taken a little inspiration from Matilda. “You can do it, Manchester!”
Based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, Get Baked has taken social media by storm with their signature Bertha chocolate cake, with even celebrities including Jamie Oliver and Amanda Holden, to name a few, ordering the massive bake and sharing both their awe and love for it. Revealing the news of a Manchester opening on social media, Get Baked said: “Hi Manchester. Guess who’s opening inside you. That’s right.”
A location has been revealed which is the former home of Live Well in Stevenson Square in the Northern Quarter. The opening date has been pushed back to February or spring next year to accommodate a huge new development – Get Baked will also take over the space next door, making one huge megastore!
In an updated Instagram post, founder Rich Myers said: “I announced the opening of Manchester a few months ago now, and explained that we were hoping for a November opening […] That obviously hasn’t happened, which is sad, and unfortunately if you miss November, December is a bit of a write off because of Christmas, and so is January because tradespeople like to go back to work half way through the fucking month.
“In all honesty though, even February is looking unlikely. The delay started (oxymoron?) because the renovation of our bakery took a lot longer than planned — we have doubled the size of the space that we moved into earlier in the year, which has been a lot of work, and it’s still ongoing.
“We have already outgrown the newly doubled space, but luckily for us, the unit next door to the one we have just taken, is now up for lease. So, we’re taking that space too, which will mean not only will I be shitting my pants at the thought of our overheads, but we’ll also be in a position where we can finally rollout stores the way we want to.
“This brings me to my next, and most important point. Our Manchester store will bring with it some monumental changes to our existing offering — nobody will have seen this coming.” We’ll have to wait and see, but honestly, we’re so excited.
The Bertha cake has become a hit nationwide due to its monstrous size and delicious chocolatey decadence. It consists of 24 layers of dark chocolate sponge and dark chocolate ganache and even one slice of the whopping cake is not for the faint-hearted let alone the whole entire cake. But unlike in Matilda, you should be able to sit at home and eat the cake in peace as opposed to having an audience like Bruce Bogtrotter.
Get Baked has also previously launched a Biscoff flavour of their viral cake which features multiple layers of dark chocolate sponge, Biscoff ganache, dark chocolate ganache and a Biscoff crumb coating the outside of the cake. The cake has become so popular that it can also be enjoyed in jar form and as Bertha balls meaning you can enjoy those chocolate cake flavours without having to take on the huge slice of it. Get Baked has even launched a chocolate cake scented candle, since it not only tastes good but smells damn good.
As well as serving humongous slices of their signature Bertha cake, Get Baked makes luxurious pies to order. Flavours include the likes of Lemon Meringue, Mississipi Mud, Caramel Fudge Brownie, Biscoff, Birthday Cake, Banoffee and even a Frankenpie (a mix of 10 different pie slices).
Once Get Baked opens in Manchester, fans will also be able to order their much-loved brownies, puddings and cookies. Their baked goods are always a sell-out both in store and online, with constant updates as to when the Bruce chocolate cake, in particular, will be back in stock.
If you can’t wait til Get Baked arrives in Manchester, get ordering here. Stay tuned for more updates on this dreamy new opening.
