While we most certainly have a number of all-singing all-dancing hotels here in Manchester, it’s low-key luxury that steals our heart the most – something that Manchester’s newest underdog, CitySuites II offers by the bucketload.
Found riverside just a few steps into Salford, CitySuites’ newest offering puts a focus on a more lavish feel, offering guests the chance to stay in a hidden oasis that not only boasts comfy, cosy rooms with great views of the city, but a peaceful spa, too.
Tucked away below the rooms, guests will find a tranquil 18-metre swimming pool, spa pool and steam room alongside the hotel’s state-of-the-art gym, which, like all gyms, we, unfortunately, dodged for the duration of our stay. Delivering a relaxing experience that’s hard to come by in a city so hellbent on getting pissed, the spa is the perfect place to wind down after a day of exploring, with everything you could possibly need to soak the day away.
Upstairs in the apartments, the bliss continues, with crisp white bedding just screaming to be dived into, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manchester city centre, and plenty of home-from-home creature comforts such as stylish furniture, comfy pillows, lavish toiletries and plush furnishings (all of which were definitely way nicer than the ones I have in my own home).
The real star of the show, however, was the hotel’s restaurant Embankment Kitchen. A restaurant worthy of ditching the street food trend for, Embankment Kitchen puts a focus on seasonal, local produce, creating stunning (and very well portioned!) brasserie dishes packed full of fresh flavour. Think British classics such as sirloin steak, pan-roasted cod and beer-battered haddock, alongside some of the most indulgent desserts in town (at least, if you ask our taste buds). We’re talking proper sticky toffee puddings, moreish cheesecakes, and rich chocolate cakes paired with sharp raspberry – the latter of which is not only the chef’s recommendation but ours, too.
While the food most definitely exceeded all of our expectations (and gained itself a place on our list of fave restaurants in town), it was the atmosphere that won us over overall, offering the perfect vibe for an intimate date night or special occasion. Rivalling the likes of The Ivy and 20 Stories for both style and fantastic food, Embankment Kitchen offers serious value for money, serving up fantastic portions for the mid-range price tag – which is reasonable enough to enjoy as a cheeky weekend treat, or as a lavish night out.
The new City Suites II aparthotel can be found at 1 New Kings Head Yard, Manchester, Salford, M3 7GF, while Embankment Kitchen it’s just a few steps away at 16 Chapel St, Salford, M3 7NH. Find out more and book here.
