It’s not often you have access to anything from 1421, just the faint knowledge of Joan of Arc doing something in France and all the medieval bits and bobs going on. But, one of our finest libraries in Manchester is actually from that long ago, and this month for one night only, you can explore the wonderful Chetham’s Library after hours.
Join the team for an exclusive after hours chance to explore the medieval stone passages, secret staircases and richly panelled rooms of Chetham’s Library. After the Library has closed to the public and the dust of the day has settled, the Chetham’s team will be opening rooms and passageways that are normally closed to the public, for a unique and magical experience.
What is the history of Chetham’s Library?

Chetham’s Library was founded in 1653 and is the oldest public library in the English-speaking world. The Library began acquiring books in August 1655, and has been adding to the collections ever since. It is housed in a beautiful sandstone building dating from 1421 which was built to accommodate the priests of Manchester’s Collegiate Church.
The Library is also known for being the place where Marx and Engels met to discuss their revolutionary ideas that changed the world. It’s also where Dr. John Dee supposedly summoned the Devil – so look out for ghosts…
What can you see after dark at Chetham’s Library?

The entire collection at Chetham’s Library has been designated as one of national and international importance, and is also an accredited museum, attracting visitors from all over the world.
From illuminated manuscripts made for royalty to the minutiae of personal life – diaries, letters, account books – the Library has a wealth of special items and collections. Explore manuscripts, printed books, albums, scrapbooks, photographs, and digital resources at Chetham’s, usually only open to readers by prior appointment.
This is an opportunity for visitors to enjoy the building without a tour guide, and soak up the magical atmosphere of the spectacular 600-year-old building. Note that due to the nature of the building, lighting will be low in some areas.
