The Orient at the Trafford Centre is undergoing a major revamp, ushering in the biggest transformation in the history of Manchester’s flagship dining hall. Since opening in 1998, the world-famous dining space has welcomed millions of hungry shoppers beneath its dramatic nautical superstructure; however, contractors have finally begun dismantling the vintage interior to introduce a brighter, modern hospitality experience.
First opened alongside the shopping centre in 1998, The Orient will bid a permanent farewell to the original wooden deck furniture that has defined the space for 28 years. Work is underway to create a more comfortable and contemporary dining environment, which will see seating capacity increase by more than 60%.
Rather than closing down the bustling food court, works will be delivered in phases over the coming months, with improvements designed to minimise disruption. Consequently, visitors will spot temporary barriers across dining areas over the coming weeks.

The Orient revamp: A new look and over 500 extra seats for the Trafford Centre dining space
Seating capacity at The Orient will expand from roughly 700 to over 1,200 covers. A range of new seating styles will be introduced, including banquettes, family-friendly tables, accessible seating for guests with mobility requirements, and dedicated areas equipped with phone and laptop charging facilities.
The new-look space will feature upgraded furniture, enhanced lighting and planting, alongside flexible areas designed to encourage visitors to spend longer in The Orient. Inspired by The Orient’s longstanding maritime heritage, the design takes cues from a contemporary cruise liner, combining elegant finishes, modern furnishings and a refreshed colour palette to create a brighter, more comfortable and welcoming environment.

A Trafford Centre spokesperson said: “The Orient is one of the most popular destinations within Trafford Centre, welcoming millions of visitors each year. This investment reflects our commitment to continually improving the experience for our guests, creating a more modern, comfortable and social environment where visitors can meet, dine and spend time together. The improvements will not only significantly increase seating capacity but also deliver a much more flexible and accessible space for all visitors to enjoy.”
The Orient revamp arrives as an influx of international brands has launched at the shopping centre, with fitness labels like Lululemon and GARAGE and toy retailer The Entertainer already trading. Plus, excitement is also mounting for the arrival of UNIQLO on Peel Avenue, which is set to open on Thursday 15th October.
