I often worry that when I die my family will go through my Google search history and instantly disown me. There’s nothing too racy. Just an embarrassing list of C-list celebrities whose careers I want to keep up with, dictionary definitions of words I should know already, and pictures of penguins, so many pictures of penguins.
Now one of my greatest fears has become a reality for the whole of the UK. Google has laid out our ‘Year in Search’ to showcase the biggest global trends in 2024. We can look particularly at what we’ve all been searching for throughout the year – everything from ‘How to vote in the UK’ to ‘When is Coronation Street on this week’. Sounds about right.
What were the top 10 searches in the UK?
The number one search topic in the UK for 2024 was the Euros. But, apart from Bellingham’s bicycle kick, I imagine most England supporters would rather forget losing another Euros final (Other parts of the UK? Some say they’re still laughing).
After that heartbreak, the next three topics to grip the UK were the tragedies surrounding Liam Payne, Jay Slater and Michael Mosley, followed by the further tragedy of the US Election. The top 10 list of searches was rounded out by Kate Middleton, Baby Reindeer, Olympics, Oasis tickets, and Fool Me Once…

What else were we searching for?
Of course, it wasn’t just TV shows, news stories and how to get our hands on Oasis tickets that we were all looking at. Google delved a little deeper into our search history to see what ‘Films’ we wanted to watch, the ‘How to…’ guides we needed, and much more.
The biggest musicians of 2024 on Google were Oasis, after their comeback announcement; while teenage darts sensation, Luke Littler captured the nation’s heart even more than Jude Bellingham, among athletes. And this year’s biggest movie on Google wasn’t Inside Out 2, Dune: Part Two or Deadpool & Wolverine, but Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Of course, no one should ever feel too proud to ask for help, but the UK’s ‘How to…’ searches are ringing some alarm bells. It’s not How to… vote in the UK, get Oasis tickets, watch Fury vs Usyk or watch Tyson vs Paul (though this is still embarrassing) that left us worried, but how to make a Pornstar Martini!
Whether it was Kate Middleton conspiracy theories, the election of Keir Starmer, Maggie Smith’s passing, Madame Web, or witnessing the Northern Lights, there were plenty of reasons for the nation to reach for the drinks cabinet in 2024…
