Westhoughton, a suburb of Bolton, Greater Manchester, has never really been known as a destination for fine dining or somewhere to grab a coffee after a spot of yoga. But for a few years now, the town has been gradually reinventing itself, especially Market Street running through the centre, adding boutique shops, a brewery taproom, an artisan butchers, deli and restaurant serving local produce, lovely cafes and bars and several beer gardens. One of the businesses that has added plenty of value to Westhoughton is Self, a coffee shop, lunch spot and wellbeing hub all in one.
Opened by local Nicki Gillon in summer 2022, Self puts wellbeing at the heart of everything it does. From yoga and meditation classes, to carer’s catch-ups and menopause get-togethers, there are so many ways to tap deep into yourself and share struggles with others, in a non-pressured, supportive environment.
If you don’t fancy taking part in a structured class, Self provides a lovely coffee shop atmosphere on a daily basis, meaning you can visit with a friend or two and have a cathartic chat over coffee, or have some alone time if that’s what you need. On a sunny day you’re also more than welcome to sit out at the front of the store, soaking up as much vitamin D as you can.
If that wasn’t enough, Self offers quite the selection of breakfast and lunch options. Pastries filled with apple, peach, strawberry and whatever’s in season adorn the counter as you walk into the small but perfectly formed space, as the indulgent aroma of roasted coffee beans hits you. If you’re in need of some proper breakfast, how about a classic avo on sourdough toast? Freshly made with local ingredients where possible, you can’t beat it.
Lunch brings so many options, too, with the likes of vibrant Buddha bowls, salads, packed focaccia sandwiches, bagels and mezze platters. Seasonality plays a huge part in Self’s menu, with hearty soups and fresh bread available in autumn and winter, and bright, fresh summer veg filling the place with summer vibes.
If you’re feeling calmed by the neutral interiors, luscious plants and lovely artwork at Self, you can actually buy plants, prints, CBD products, refillable beauty products, and so much more from the shelves inside. Don’t hesitate to ask staff for more information and prices, as they’re always so willing to help.
If you’re passing by Westhoughton, or fancy making the trip specially, Self really is worth a visit – and you’re welcome to take some of their wonderful menu to go if you can’t spare the time. Visit the Self Instagram page for upcoming events and how to book.
