Concrete pavements and the toot of trams quickly fade into the background as you trade the buzz of the city for the sound of rushing water and rustling leaves at this stunning garden in Greater Manchester. It might be hard to believe, but a sprawling expanse of nature lies just beyond Manchester’s ring road, which will make you feel as if you’re in a whole other county away from the daily grind.
The first-ever RHS Garden to be located in an urban area, RHS Garden Bridgewater in Worsley, Salford, features a ‘cutting-edge’ design by RHS Chelsea Flower Show gold medal winners, featuring more than a quarter of a million plants.

Roam 154 acres of horticultural history at RHS Garden Bridgewater
RHS Garden Bridgewater stretches across an impressive 154 acres in Salford. Visitors step past historic red brick buildings, occasionally crossing paths with free-roaming chickens on the grass. The grounds encompass a huge variety of landscapes, from dense woodland trails to a lake bordered by cascading rocky waterfalls.
Inside the 11-acre Weston Walled Garden, believed to be the largest publicly accessible working walled garden in the UK, you’ll find seasonal blooms like purple and pink tulips growing alongside towering alliums. Historic glasshouses shelter delicate potted plants, offering a direct link to the area’s rich botanical past.

The Weston Walled Garden also offers a stunning, exotic-inspired Paradise Garden – with Asiatic and Mediterranean gardens bringing a little bit of colour to Salford. If that wasn’t enough, guests can also explore the Orchard Garden, as well as a Chinese Streamside Garden, which is actually the first authentic Chinese garden in the UK. For the kids, the garden is home to a four-acre Woodland Play area, designed to encourage children of all ages to engage with nature, with plenty to do and see during your visit.
A lakeside café and specialist plant centre
The 30-minute journey from Manchester city centre leads straight to this green sanctuary. Beyond the walking routes, the estate features a dedicated retail space for plant enthusiasts. Green-fingered visitors can browse shelves stocked with unusual cacti, packets of vegetable seeds, and specialist supplies to take home.
Afterwards, a large café area provides a place to recharge. Grab a hot coffee and take a seat on the spacious outdoor wooden deck, which directly overlooks the water. The open skies and fresh air provide an escape from the urban world of Manchester.
