Manchester City Council has announced that a major road that runs through Manchester city centre will be partially closed for almost a week. Some of the lanes of the Mancunian Way are set to close for essential inspection works to be carried out overnight, allowing one of Manchester’s busiest roads to continue operating.
The inner lanes of the Mancunian Way will be closed to allow engineers to safely carry out an inspection of the central reservation to ensure that the road remains safe for motorists. The works are also being carried out ahead of the replacement of parts of the central reservation, which is due to take place in 2026.
An estimated 15 million journeys are taken along this Mancunian Way annually.
Which parts of the Mancunian Way will be partially closed and when?
From Monday 29th September to Saturday 4th October, the inner lanes of the Mancunian Way will be closed in both directions along its entire length. The inner lanes will be closed from 7pm to 6am, with traffic management removed during the day for normal usage of the Manchester road.

Will there be any diversions in place?
There will not be any diversions in place whilst the inspection works are being carried out on the central reservation of the Mancunian Way, as the Manchester road is only partially closed. The other two lanes of the Mancunian Way will be open to use as normal, as will the slip roads.
Councillor Anthony McCaul, Deputy Executive Member for Clean Air, Environment and Transport, said: “We’re grateful for people’s patience during these inspection works. The Mancunian Way is a vital piece of the city’s transport infrastructure and it’s really important that we regularly ensure that it is safe for use.”
