The annual Walk for Women is set to return to the streets of Manchester in celebration of strong and inspirational women for International Women’s Day. After returning to the city in 2022 post-pandemic, and then proving to be a huge success last year, the annual event will be held once again and it’s expected that hundreds will meet in the city in the name of equality.
The much-loved free event, which will take place on March 9, is a celebration of the significant economic, political, and social achievements that women have made since they first won the right to vote just over 100 years ago. Organisers say the walk is a great opportunity to come together with family and friends, colleagues – and strangers too – to share a passion for equality and creating opportunities for Manchester women.
Those in attendance are encouraged to creatively chant and cheer, bring along with them boisterous and safe instruments to bang and clang to the beat of their own drums. As well as preparing to belt out and sing along to musical performances. Participants are also prompted to create banners and posters to convey messages of support for why they are celebrating the women in their lives or the world over on this special day.
Held the day after the world marks International Women’s Day (March 8), this year’s theme is called ‘Inspire Inclusion’ which is a nod to countless women from all backgrounds and across all ages who have made aspirational strides and continue to trailblaze through barriers. The Walk for Women is a chance to hail this fearless fighting spirit that a diverse and vibrant city like Manchester continues to thrive on.
Councillor Joanna Midgley, Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council, said: “The walk around our amazing city is a celebratory moment for progress and women everywhere, but it’s also a vivid reminder of the continuing work that needs to be done to challenge negative attitudes and obstacles surrounding women and girls. The support on this day is a pivotal reflection of all that has been done and all that is to come for women’s equality.”
The official route will begin at Mount Street behind Central Library (by the John Cassidy ‘Ardrift’ statue), the Walk for Women route will make its way to Albert Square before turning onto Brazennose Street and making a right to Deansgate, with the final stop being Manchester Cathedral.
Lone rangers and groups alike are very welcome on the walk – the Walk for Women event is totally free and anyone can take part. If you’d like to register your group to have an official place in the walk you can apply here.
Walk for Women 2024 will take place on Saturday 9th March from 12pm to 2.30pm.
