Here at Secret Manchester, we’re big fans of the Channel 4 show Grand Designs, and we know many of you are too. It’s always fun when a Grand Designs property or project local to us pops up, and in the case of a dilapidated water tower in the nearby town of Lymm, Cheshire, we were intrigued to hear that it had been turned into an Airbnb, allowing the public to stay in and experience the incredible building − and that it was one of host Kevin McCloud‘s favourite projects on the show.
Originally built in 1870, Jannette and Russell bought the 90ft disused water tower and, after three architects and seven years in the making, it was transformed into their incredible family home. After their two children flew the nest, the couple decided to stay in the home but rent the spare space out on Airbnb.
Since opening it up to guests, Jannette and Russell’s unique home has become one of the ‘most loved‘ Airbnbs, with 100 percent of recent guests rating it 5-stars. The tower also has a number of accolades under its belt, as well as being featured on TV as one of Kevin’s favourite ever Grand Designs.
The Grade II listed landmark was designed by one of Britain’s leading architectural practices, with a wrap-around extension following the shape of the octagonal water tower creating a futuristic-looking home − it’s very much giving 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Sitting on a hill, the family house is the tallest building for miles, with views from the top of the tower 95 ft high − taking in Manchester, Liverpool, the hills of Wales and the peaks of Derbyshire.
The owners of this unique, very old but very new property guarantee a break from your everyday life that will have you unwinding from the moment you walk through the door − relaxing stillness, peaceful warmth, and romantic atmosphere are assured.
Although the property acts as the family home, visitors have their own separate entrance up a stone spiral staircase to their suite, ensuring privacy and comfort. The owners also say: “This is a quiet home so if you’re looking to play loud music, stay out late, or party, this is not the place for you!”
The two options on Airbnb for visitors to stay in the so-called Grand Designs home in Lymm are the Penthouse Suite and the Master Suite. Both provide incredible interior design to match the wraparound extension, with plenty of luxury additions to make you feel all warm and cosy.
Alongside a stunning sound system, mood lighting, a guest tablet, en-suites, luxury showers, continental breakfasts delivered straight to your room, and welcome refreshments upon arrival, you’ll also have exclusive access to the spectacular roof garden, with sun loungers, a traditional teak hot tub and stunning 360° views of Cheshire and beyond.
Be it a long leisurely sundowner, a soak in the hot tub, a yoga session, or simply lounging around in the sunshine, the roof garden is a space like no other, nestled within the original distinct battlement walls of the tower.
With a quick search online, its easy to see why Kevin McCloud chose Lymm Water Tower as one of his 100 favourite Grand Designs.
