Pub culture is a defining part of the UK’s heritage and plays an important role in community life, bringing people together and providing a social hub for towns and cities across the country. However, rising costs and ongoing economic pressures continue to challenge the sector, with the British Beer & Pub Association revealing around two pubs close their doors every day.
To find out where Britain’s pub culture remains strongest and which locations are home to the country’s most vibrant pub scenes, Capital on Tap analysed 32 major British towns and cities, looking at a range of factors such as pub density, average Google ratings, the proportion of independent venues and local search demand.
Manchester is the fourth strongest pub scene in the UK

Manchester has been crowned Britain’s fourth strongest pub scene, achieving a final score of 6.16. The city has 4.33 pubs and bars per 10,000 residents, an average Google rating of 4.36/5, and 76.21% independent venues.
This thriving independent scene is exemplified by The Rat & Pigeon, a beloved three-story independent pub and live music venue located at 33 Back Piccadilly in the Northern Quarter. Strong demand is reflected in 1,126.21 monthly searches per 10,000 people, while pub and bar numbers grew by 6.25% between 2023 and 2025, despite an average pint price of £6. And there’s plenty more where that came from.
Which other cities have strong pub scenes?

Brighton and Hove takes the crown for Britain’s strongest pub scene, achieving a final score of 7.36. The location has the highest pub and bar density, with 7.74 venues per 10,000 residents, while its pubs also score an impressive 4.42/5 on Google.
In second place is Norwich, the medieval city, scoring 7.19 overall and standing out for the strength of its independent pub offering, with the highest proportion in the index at 86.42%.
Joint second for affordability, Liverpool ranks third overall for the UK’s most resilient pub scenes. With 78.65% of its pubs independently owned, Liverpool also retains a strong local character, with a diverse mix of traditional cosy pubs to music-filled favourites, particularly across the city centre and Georgian Quarter.
