When it comes to history and heritage, we’re pretty rich here in Manchester – being the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and the site of plenty of historical events. Now, the East Lancashire Railway (ELR), which runs through Greater Manchester for a stretch, is set to host quite the show for locomotive enthusiasts in the form of its annual Legends of Steam event.
Climb aboard for the first large-scale steam event of the year – your chance to ride up and down the line behind a strong line-up of express steam locomotives. The third year of Legends of Steam at the ELR promises an all-steam event with some star locomotives joining the mix, including the likes of ‘Tornado‘, ‘Manston‘ and ‘City of Wells‘.

‘Tornado’ Freight Experiences – Brake Van Rides
On Friday 10th and Sunday 12th April, ‘Tornado’ will be paired with a 1960’s Freight Train, offering Brake Van Rides for a supplementary fare. Where else can you ride behind an A1 Pacific and enjoy the sights and sounds of this iconic engine working hard from a panoramic Brake Van?
During the booking process, you will have the option to add these Brake Van Rides once you have selected your travel tickets.
Dining with legends
You can also sit back in one of the opulent Pullman-style carriages and let the years slip away, as you enjoy fine dining whilst being hauled by the legendary ‘Tornado’.
Remembering the Somerset & Dorset Railway
During the event, 34092 ‘City of Wells’ will be paired with the guest 34070 ‘Manston’ for some double headed specials, as 2026 marks 60 years since the closure of the famous Somerset and Dorset Railway. Here, it was common to see these Bulleid Pacifics at the head of the ‘Pines Express’ which ran from Manchester to Bournemouth.
