The North West produces some of the best food- from Lancashire hotpot to pies, Eccles cakes to Manchester tart. And then you have the pasty barm.
A delicacy originating from Bolton, the pasty barm is a carb-lover’s dream. Said to have been invented by schoolboys in the 1950s as a cheap dinner, a pasty barm typically consisted of a pasty with either a meat and gravy or cheese and onion filling, sandwiched between a buttered barm cake. [Cue the age-old debate of what you call a bread roll.]
However, launching today (July 18) at their Middlebrook branch, Japanese restaurant YO! has created a new twist on the North West classic which sees the Bolton barm accompanied by three chicken gyozas, katsu curry sauce, spring onions and pickled ginger. Referred to as the ‘Gyoza Barm’, the creation is designed to celebrate the fusion of Japanese and Boltonian cuisines and will available for a limited time only. YO! also has a vegetarian option of the ‘Gyoza Barm’, featuring spinach dumplings filled with cabbage, carrots, edamame and more veggies.
Referred to as the ‘Gyoza Barm’, the creation is designed to celebrate the fusion of Japanese and Boltonian cuisines and will available for a limited time only at the newly-opened YO! at Middlebrook Retail and Leisure Park. Locals will be able to taste the new barm delicacy during the first week of opening, with the first 30 customers who request a ‘Gyoza Barm’ being able to receive it for free.
Adam Townsley, Head of Food & Development at YO! said: “We’re hugely excited to create a true Bolton & Japan fusion in the form of the ‘Gyoza Barm’ and would love to see any intrigued locals to come down and give it a try, embrace the two culinary traditions and get a taste of a Japanese twist on your classic barm. This is such an exciting time for YO! and we’re so pleased to be launching a new restaurant in Middlebrook, what better way to celebrate than by launching an exclusive menu item which encapsulates both Japan and Bolton.”
