A brand new spot set to serve the city’s first biggest doner kebab is opening in Manchester this week, which means kebabs are now not just reserved for your post-night out scran. Known as Great British Doner (GBD, for short), the new Manchester opening describes itself as a “next-generation kebab house” offering an unseen blend of authentic Turkish street food and proudly British bold flavours.
Opening in Barton Arcade on Deansgate on Friday 27th June, Great British Doner aims to bring a fresh take on one of the UK’s favourite dishes. However, Great British Doner will also be home to the biggest doner kebab in Manchester (and a first for the city), which is cooked on a vertical rotisserie.
GBD is the brainchild of the former owner of Manchester’s beloved Café Istanbul, Mehmet Nezir Korkut, who is a Turkish-born entrepreneur and restaurateur drawing on over 25 years of hospitality experience. Highlights on the Great British Doner menu include 100% premium beef doner, carefully layered and hand-seasoned, as well as marinated chicken doner, made with a balanced 60/40 mix of breast and leg. Vegetarian options include halloumi and falafel wraps, while vegan doner is made using spiced vegetables and hummus.
All wraps, burgers and boxes are served with a fresh combination of salad ingredients, including tomato, onion, lettuce, red cabbage and pickled cucumber, and guests can choose from a selection of house sauces, including GBD Sauce, jalapeño cheese, hot chilli, and garlic & herb.
Dessert offerings range from a luxurious red velvet cake and cheesecake to the viral frozen chocolate doner, rich chocolate shavings poured on top of a warm pancake. The drinks include bottomless soft drinks at only £2.50, traditional Turkish Ayran, a popular Turkish salty yogurt drink, and şalgam, a turnip juice. A dedicated kids menu is also on offer with mini doner wraps, burgers or nuggets with fries and fruit juice.
How to get a free doner kebab
To celebrate the grand opening on Friday 27th June, Great British Doner is giving away free doners to the first 100 customers from 1pm, alongside exclusive branded merchandise for 20 guests. One lucky diner will unwrap a Golden Wrap, earning them free doner kebabs for an entire year.
Following its city-centre debut, GBD plans to open two additional sites at Manchester Arndale and Piccadilly later this year, with further nationwide growth in the pipeline.
