Wigan isn’t overly known as up-and-coming in the grand scheme of Greater Manchester, but with a fair few developments going on, it could soon rival the likes of Stockport and Altrincham. One particularly exciting thing coming to Wigan is Fettlers, a new market hall bringing the best of modern recreation alongside maintaining tradition in the town.
In a social media post, Fettlers said: “Welcome to Fettlers – Wigan’s exciting new landmark development in the heart of town. Complete with a new market, hotel, cinema, bowling alley and more, Fettlers will transform the town centre into a lively and vibrant destination.”
In Wiganese, ‘Fettle’ means to fix, mend or make something better, hopefully showing how the development will preserve local charm and be a true meeting place for the people of Wigan.
The post continues: “Fettlers is a celebration of the people who have been fettlin’ past and present, those who make Wigan – the grafters, crafters and dreamers. Here’s to you. The people of Wigan.”
The flagship Fettlers development has reached another exciting milestone with the region’s leading hospitality operator appointed to manage the market at Fettlers. Northern Lights Group (NLG), which runs some of the North West’s most exciting and renowned restaurants and entertainment venues, will be the new operator of Fettlers market – so it’s very much in safe hands.
The announcement comes as Wigan Council published images of the new Fettlers market hall with a bright, colourful and exciting space, with traditional market traders, alongside offerings like a bakery, coffee shop, bars, and a food hall.
Councillor David Molyneux MBE, Leader of Wigan Council, said: “This redevelopment is bringing the market back to the heart of the town centre, and I am delighted that we are announcing this new operator during the nationwide Love Your Local Market campaign.
“Wigan has been a proud market town for centuries and we want to see our market survive, thrive into the future. It is set to be a vital part what brings people into town, supporting local, and being part of our community when it opens late next year.”
The new Fettlers market hall is expected to be built and open late next year, and the existing Wigan market hall will remain open until the new building is ready for occupation.
