… And it seems Elnecot owner Michael Clay agrees. Expanding new concept Dokes Pizzeria – which has so far only been available at the Society food hall – Clay and co. are taking their ‘Anglo-Saxon’ pizzas to a whole new neighbourhood, selecting Prestwich as the winning contender for their brand new, intimate restaurant.
While the concept may seem wildly different at first glance to their first-born baby, Elnecot, upon further inspection it’s the perfect accompaniment to the popular Ancoats restaurant – similarly celebrating British produce that Clay and his team uncover from all over the island. Don’t let the Neapolitan-looking crust fool you. It’s all-out Great British.
Taking over a spot on Bury New Road, formerly occupied by Italian wine bar Basil + Lily, Dokes Prestwich is the perfect all-day dining destination – not only serving proper stone-baked pizza topped with the finest British produce in the 40-cover space (think Welsh chorizo, cured pig’s cheek and English cheeses), but an array of brunch and lunch dishes, too, which will mirror the delectable British dishes served at sister site, Elnecot. Expect pasta from Yorkshire, seasonal salads and more – all showcasing the best of British and changing with the seasons.
In addition to booth-style seating, guests will also get to enjoy the restaurant’s open-layout kitchen, which will put a spotlight on the chefs as they craft Dokes’ stunning pizzas. Speaking of pizza, you can expect nods to the Old English with their Beowulf topped with pepperoni, ‘nduja, chilli, burrata and pesto; Roll Right topped with smoked bacon, white onion, Rollright cheese, crème fraîche and new potato (trust us, it works). Plus, on their brunch menu, you’ll find their exclusive Breaking the fast pizza topped with leek and fennel sausage, jamon, mushroom, tomato and a duck egg that is sure to wake you up.
And how can we forget the dips? Those pizza crusts are meant for dipping and guests can choose from the likes of hot Saddleworth honey; confit garlic and herb; Wharfe Valley truffle mayonnaise and Chepyn Blue ranch. As well as pizza, Dokes also serve up pasta and salad dishes which change weekly as well as starters such as the weekly croquette special, bruschettas with classic toppings of tomato, garlic and basil to more lively flavours like ‘nduja and goat’s cheese.
Can’t decide? Dokes even offers an experience menu where your server selects seven dishes to share (varying from pasta dishes to small plates like croquettes and bruschetta) and also includes one pizza all for £25 per person. Plus, you can add on three glasses of the sommelier’s choice of wine which compliment the dishes perfectly to create the ultimate experience.
