We’re all for a good train here in Manchester, whether it’s the ones that get us from A to B on a daily basis (and the ones that don’t), or the novelty ones from back in the day, powered by steam and a whole load of nostalgia. Now, arguably the most famous train of all is set to thunder through Greater Manchester, as Thomas the Tank Engine drops by for Day Out With Thomas.
The steam team’s number one blue engine – Thomas himself – is waiting for you on the East Lancashire Railway(ELR), for one great big adventure. Continuing next weekend (August 3-4), your Day Out With Thomas on the ELR starts with the timed entry on your ticket – join the cohort at Bury Bolton Street Station up to 45 minutes in advance. That’s just enough time to build up lots of excitement.
You’ll meet Sir Topham Hatt at the station, say hello to Thomas on the platform and then climb aboard a carriage. Thomas will pull your train through the amazing countryside of Summerseat, Burrs Country and Nuttall Parks, on a fun-filled journey to the quaint local town of Ramsbottom.
After a quick break here, one of the dazzling ELR diesel trains will pull you and Thomas back to Bury Bolton Street, where the doors to Bury Transport Museum are open for you at the restored Castlecroft Goods Warehouse from 1848. Learn how trains like Thomas operate, and all the important history that goes along with steam locomotives, alongside dozens of original artifacts from the turn of the 20th century and beyond, each telling its own unique tale about the people living and working in the industrial North West.
You’ll also find lots more family-friendly and Thomas-themed activities including stories, activities and hilarious performances by Rusty and Dusty, Sodor’s cheeky station sweepers − they’ll be singing, dancing and entertaining throughout the day. You can also enjoy fun fair rides, face painting, balloon modelling and lots more.
A Day Out With Thomas ticket is needed for entry into the Bury Transport Museum, which you can find here.
