Manchester may be accustomed to the international spotlight, but a historic Roman city just an hour away has captured global acclaim. Named both the prettiest city in the United Kingdom and the most beautiful in the world, Chester recently outperformed heavyweights like Venice and Rome in a unique architectural study.
Conducted by Online Mortgage Advisor, the research evaluated hundreds of streets and over 2,400 building façades via Google Street View to determine how closely urban landscapes align with the “golden ratio” of 1:1.618.
Outranking global icons

Chester secured top honours with a beauty score of 83.7%, edging out world-renowned destinations including Venice (83.3%) and Rome (82.0%). Its winning score stems from a seamless blend of ancient Roman heritage and well-preserved medieval architecture.
Historical roots and architectural marvels
The foundation of Chester’s visual appeal traces back to AD 76, when it was established as the Roman fortress ‘Deva‘ on a sandstone ridge overlooking the River Dee. Serving as a vital military and administrative centre for Northern Britain, the fortress eventually transitioned into a bustling river port and commercial hub, expanding far beyond its original defensive walls.

Central to the city’s modern character are “The Rows“—a distinctive network of two-tiered medieval shopping galleries constructed over ancient Roman ruins following the city’s surrender to William the Conqueror. Featuring half-timbered facades and stone-vaulted cellars, these double-level structures give the city a visual rhythm that closely mirrors the proportions of the golden ratio.
