People are being encouraged to help shape the plans for a new transport interchange in Bury, which will make it easier to get around on the Bee Network. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM), Bury Council and Greater Manchester Combined Authority are working together to redevelop Bury Interchange, turning the existing 1980s facility into a modern, accessible and welcoming transport hub.
The project will be delivered in two phases, with the first starting this autumn when work on a new footbridge and improvements to the tram platform are due to begin. It follows the success of the award-winning Stockport Interchange – a new £140 million state-of-the-art transport hub built alongside 196 apartments and a rooftop park.
Bury Interchange has been identified as the next in line to be redeveloped, with the aim of it becoming Greater Manchester’s first operationally carbon neutral transport hub. The proposals would improve connections between buses, trams, walking, wheeling and cycling routes, making it easier to travel to and from Bury town centre on the Bee Network.

The project will also support Bury’s Town Centre Masterplan by creating a welcoming and accessible gateway to the town centre as well as the potential for new homes.
Under the proposals, which will be subject to further consultation later in the year before final approvals, the existing interchange site would be redeveloped, with plans including:
- A new interchange building
- A reconfigured bus station to improve bus operations and passenger facilities
- Upgraded Metrolink platforms with improved access
- Improved public spaces, including better walking, wheeling and cycling routes.
New residential apartments could also be built between the redeveloped interchange and Casewells, the new flexi hall which is currently under construction at Bury Market. TfGM is currently searching for a partner to fund and operate the residential scheme as part of the second phase of the redevelopment, which is expected to begin in early 2028.
The first phase of work, which will include a new footbridge connecting the tram platform to Union Square and Pyramid Park, as well as improvements to the current Metrolink platform, was granted planning permission in July 2025 and is due to start this autumn.

People who live, travel to or work in Bury are now being encouraged to help shape the next stage of the project and the future of the interchange, ahead of a formal public consultation on the second phase of the scheme which is due to take place this winter. Phase 2 of the scheme includes the new transport hub, improved public spaces and the proposed residential apartments.
Chris Barnes, Infrastructure Delivery Director at TfGM, said: “The most successful projects are informed by the views of the local community, so we want to hear your feedback to help understand what is important to consider in the redeveloped Bury interchange.
“Many aspects of the Bury interchange redevelopment design are still being developed and decided. Your feedback will help shape the next stage of the project and the future of the new facility.”
