Earlier this year saw Greater Manchester’s finest eateries win big at the Asian Restaurant Awards 2023, including one spot being named ‘Restaurant of the Year’ in the North of England. But now, organisers of the event have announced the winners for this year’s Asian Curry Awards, dubbed the “Curry Oscars”, and there are some big contenders representing the North West and Greater Manchester region.
The list of over 200 venues across the country were whittled down by online votes from members of the spice loving public, which decided the eventual finalists. These were then assessed by a panel of judges from the Asian Catering Federation (ACF), to determine the category winners, which have now been revealed.
The victors were revealed at a glittering gala dinner and presentation ceremony at Grosvenor House in London last night (November 19). The Asian Curry Awards cover the complete range of Asian and Oriental cuisines: Bangladeshi, Burmese, Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Malaysian, Middle Eastern, Pakistani, Singaporean, Sri Lankan, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese.
A number of dining spots in Manchester city centre made the Asian Curry Awards 2023 shortlist including Indian deli in Ancoats and Chorlton Lily’s, Chinese restaurants Pinwei and Red Chilli and Indian restaurant on King Street Wah Ji Wah. Akbar’s Group, which has a restaurant on Manchester’s Liverpool Road and who’s owner Shabbir Hussain won the Curry King Award two years in a row, also made the shortlist for serving some of the best curries and nominated for ‘Best Group Restaurant of the Year’.
However, representing Greater Manchester at the finals was Cheetham Hill buffet restaurant and banquet hall Al Maidah, which was crowned the winner of ‘Buffet Restaurant of the Year’. Plus, Ruchi in Glossop was named ‘Asian Restaurant of the Year’.
My Lahore in Blackburn was the winner of ‘British Asian Fusion Restaurant of the Year’ beating its Bradford and Manchester branches as well as Tampopo in Manchester’s Corn Exchange. In addition, a few more North West dining spots achieved awards including a highly commended award being given to Junnon in Helsby, Cheshire and Dalvee in Pouton-le-Flyde near Blackpool for ‘Asian Restaurant of the Year in the North West’.
