We might not have fond memories of lockdown (it feels like a blur) but one event that took place that was pretty memorable was Greater Manchester’s own mayor Andy Burnham spinning the tunes in a DJ battle against Liverpool’s former mayor, Steve Rotherham. However, this time the circumstances are better and Andy Burnham will be back behind the DJ decks in Manchester once more this August.
So cancel whatever you have planned as the mayor will be playing a setlist of Manchester classic tunes at Ramona on Swan Street on Wednesday 3rd August. And if you’re a loyal fan of Ramona then you’ll know the bar serves up £5 margaritas on Wednesdays from 4pm til midnight. Talk about a good mid-week night out!
Announcing the news on Instagram, Ramona wrote: “Yes the mayor! He swings in for pizza quite a bit so we asked him if he fancied Djing, He said…He’d absolutely love to! Expect lots of New Order, Manchester classics and 90s summer Jams. Bring the party Andy Burnham you got this.”

Ramona also recently unveiled the line-up for the third instalment of its Ramona Radio series, where every Wednesday, a different artist takes over the playlist both in the venue and on a live stream. The line-up for August includes hip-hop pioneer Mikey D.O.N., British soul star Mica Millar, and writer and DJ Bill Brewster, with Andy Burnham kicking things off at the start of the month.
A live streaming service was set up in 2020 to boost Manchester’s nightlife during the coronavirus lockdown which raised nearly £500,000 for charities. This also involved a mayor head-to-head between Andy Burnham and Steve Rotherham in a charity DJ battle in a bid to prove whose city has the best music.
