Windrush Day is just around the corner, a commemoration held on 22 June every year to honour the contributions of migrants to the post-war economy, and Manchester will be taking part. Specifically, it celebrates Afro-Caribbeans who began arriving on the HMT Empire Windrush in 1948.
Every year, the Caribbean & African Health Network (CAHN) proudly hosts a flagship Windrush Day celebration in Manchester, and this year is no different. It’s a time for communities to come together, celebrate the power of migration, and especially, honour the lasting contributions of the Windrush generation.
This year’s event in Manchester will be held on Saturday 22 June from 12pm−6pm at Alexandra Park, just off Princess Road. Windrush 76 will build on the successes of last year’s celebrations, which marked the 75th anniversary of the arrival of HMT Windrush and simultaneously honoured the 75th birthday of the NHS.
As ever, entry is free for all. The day will showcase cultural expression through authentic Caribbean food, artistic displays, artefacts and performances, and a variety of stallholders will exhibit their products and services. Health checks and screenings will also take place, as is CAHN’s main function.
In addition to exuberant and enlightening entertainment from the main stage, attendees can look forward to nostalgic reflection and community storytelling in the elders’ tent and fun in the children’s play area. More excitement will come in the form of competitive sports, scheduled to run throughout the day for all ages, making Windrush Day celebrations in Manchester a real treat for all the family.
Windrush 76 is also set to feature key civic leaders from the region, including Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, cementing the importance of Windrush Day in Manchester and local government.
