Friday 12 June (Day Two) hands us the quietest day of the World Cup for a while in numbers — only two matches — but not in significance. Both belong to the opening round of group games, and both put a host nation under the spotlight for the first time, so there is plenty to chew on before a long weekend of football arrives.
The early evening kicks off with Canada v Bosnia & Herzegovina at BMO Field in Toronto, a Group B opener at 8pm BST, and the more watchable of the two for anyone hoping to be in bed before midnight. Jesse Marsch’s Canada, at a World Cup in successive editions for the first time, face a Bosnia side that eliminated Italy in March’s play-off final and will fancy their chances.Later on, the night owls can watch the United States open Group D against Paraguay at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, kicking off at 2am BST on Saturday morning. A bright start would give either host an early foothold in the race for the knockout places.
