When the UK gets caught in a heatwave, where do you go? Hopefully somewhere with air con, so when the team over at Where’s Cool couldn’t find a map of where those places were – they built one.
There are over 280,000 pubs, cafes, restaurants and bars in England and Wales – only around 8,000 (3%) of them are confirmed to have air conditioning. So Where’s Cool have taken one for the team and plotted the places we can go to keep cool under that sweet sweet aircon, and they’re all ears for any suggestions you may have.
How do you know which places are air conditioned?
Every food business in England and Wales is legally required to register with the FSA’s Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. That’s where the venues come from – so coverage is comprehensive and current.
For the AC status, Where’s Cool have cross-referenced with the public MHCLG Energy Performance Certificate dataset. Where a venue’s EPC says it has cooling, they mark it confirmed.
For everything else – they ask us. Tap a venue and tell Where’s Cool whether it has AC, or no AC. Once a few people agree, the map updates.
Thomas Chivers, Where’s Cool creator said: “Like many remote workers, if I work from home this week, I will be doing so without the luxury of air conditioning.
“I also can’t read through every single Google review of local cafes to find out if they have AC or not.
“During the last heatwave in May, I managed to find a data source that shows confirmed venues with air conditioning. When I shared this with friends, they asked if I could create a map so they could benefit as well, and it is now available for the general public.
“Whether you’re looking for somewhere to work from this week, or even a cool place to watch the match, simply stick in your postcode and see where near you has air conditioning!”
